45% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot. Reminiscent for Stepha Asseo (owner/winemaker) of some 'late harvest' style wines he made for this blend in 2006 and 2010. Opaque purple colour. Tarry black fruit and chocolate on the nose. Concentrated palate, but the alcohol is too evident. It feels like this will only increase with time. Chalky tannins are well refined given the muscular three varieties blended here. All about power.

Moderately firm reduction flattens the fruit at present. Otherwise, there is fine richness to the bigger and richer if less refined flavors that exude less minerality on the firm, serious and grippy finish that is borderline rustic. As is often the case, this is quite powerful and robust but the balance isn't at its usual level, at least not at present. Drink 2030+

Picked on the 26th of August but it is still a totally intense black colour. Huge weight but it is not clumsy, a dark fruit, perhaps some plums, a little bit of oak, really quite backward. Was time to pick from the fruit point of view but have avoided dry tannins.

The Nocio is a big, powerful wine endowed with more than enough textural richness and sheer volume to handle its French and Slavonian oak. Suave and sophisticated, the 2018 Pichon Baron is a real head-turner. Silky, polished tannins wrap around a core of inky dark red/purplish berry fruit. More than anything else, the 2018 impresses for its exceptional balance. All the elements are so impeccably balanced. That will make the 2018 easy to drink relatively early, although my preference would be to leave it in the cellar for the better part of the next decade. Rose petal, spice, blood orange and mint add brightness and perfume on the long, finely-knit finish.

Pichon Baron is exceptional in 2018. Pliant, silky and super-finessed, the 2018 has a level of textural finesse that really elevates the wine into Pauillac's upper echelon. Ripe fruit and silky tannins give the 2018 much of its inimitable finesse. At the same time, the 2018 is bright, punchy and surprisingly fresh, not to mention absolutely impeccable in its balance. The blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, while new oak is 80%.

The 2018 Pichon-Longueville Baron is made up of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. The Merlot was harvested September 24-25, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested October 3-10. The wine is to be aged 18 months in barriques, 80% new and 20% one year old, and production represents 50% of the harvest this year. Very deep purple-black colored, it begins a little coy, rolling slowly and languidly out of the glass with notions of baked raspberries, blueberry coulis, crème de cassis and incense plus nuances of lilacs, truffles, damp soil and garrigue with wafts of lavender and wild sage. Full-bodied, voluptuous and oh-so-seductive, the palate reveals layer upon layer of savory, earthy and black fruit preserves, framed by wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins and lovely freshness, finishing very long and perfumed. Beautiful.

Straight from the nose you feel the wave of power with the wine uncurling through the palate, starting with tight notes of cassis then gently softening into sweeter brambled hedgerow fruits alongside a ton of ink and pencil lead. The tannins are present but seductive, and as is often the case this year, they're concentrated without being remote. It’s less monolithic than the 2010 with some of the seduction of 2009 at this property but with higher levels of extraction. The harvest took place between 24 September and 11 October. Again, we see here a Pauillac with the highest alcohol ever but it carries it extremely well. There was one week less of maceration than normal, so 21 days instead of 28, which will have helped control extractions. 86IPT. Drinking Window 2026 - 2040

Very smart and much more exuberant than I had expected, Directeur Général Christian Seely prefers this wine to both his 2010 and 2016 and I happen to agree. The balance is already evident and while it will undoubtedly start to drink early in its life it has the legs to run and run. This is a blackberry and blackcurrant-soaked wine with perfect weight and intensity. Something magical happened here in 2018 and they have managed not to lose any flavours from the vine to the barrel. The length and freshness of the tannins and acidity on the finish is nothing short of tremendous and everything is held together by succulent, perfectly seasoned oak. This is one of my favourite Pichon Baron’s of all time. Its seamless flavour appears to borrow elements from every great style of Cabernet in the world, combine them, and then make them its own.

This, the oldest section of vines within the Rollin estate, having been planted by Raymond back in 1945. The soil is an excellent representation of the appellation, combining clay and red iron with a firm bedrock of limestone. Bright crimson colour, aromas of cherry, cinnamon and clove spice. An easy flowing style with its forward drinking fruit characters, whilst containing a fine 1er Cru density, expressing its terroir position below Les Vergelesses opposite the hill of Corton.

This is restrained to the point of being borderline inexpressive though aggressive swirling coaxes notes of highly spiced and intensely floral aromas of red currant, black cherry and kirsch to reveal themselves. The mouth feel of the strikingly seductive medium weight plus sized flavors is pure silk and satin as the grain of the tannins is ultra-fine. There is also excellent underlying tension and delineation to the understated and harmonious finish that really fans out on the beautifully well-balanced finish. This is a stunner of a wine that should thoroughly reward long-term cellaring. Drink 2025+

The 2020 is packed with soft red cherry and blue fruits plus iris, lavender, thyme and delicious white pepper. A small amount of whole bunch fermentation (18%) and maturation in a combination of Stockinger casks and smaller barrels, old and new, gives a gorgeous vivid fruit profile and well-judged spice, a glorious backdrop to the gleaming acidity and soft, powdery tannins. Only 750 cases produced. Drink 2023-2032.

Wonderfully characterful, classy and pure but beautifully classical. Very impressive.

Perhaps because of that, it will appeal more to traditionalists who often find Neipperg's wines too flamboyant. The 1996's opaque black-purple color suggests extraordinary concentration. The wine offers beautifully integrated sweet, toasty oak, a sweet, smoky, olive, blackcurrant, licorice, and mineral-scented nose, medium to full body, admirable integration of tannin, acidity, and alcohol, and a seamless, long, concentrated finish with the vintage's noteworthy tannin well-displayed. It will require 3-5 years of cellaring, and should easily keep through the first decade of the next century. I tasted this wine on four separate occasions during my trip to Bordeaux, rating it exactly the same on each occasion, with consistently laudatory comments. Drink: 2000-2010.

Good bright medium red. Reticent aromas of red and black fruits, smoky minerality, underbrush and sweet oak; complex but less sexy and expressive today than the Suchots, which is typical of these two wines. Similarly less showy in the early going, but with superb definition and depth to its small berry, smoke, mineral and spice flavors. This very suave wine is most impressive today on the very long, silky back end. Give this four or five years to approach its plane of peak drinkability.

Tasted at BI Wine Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 L'Eglise Clinet has long been a strong performer. Here, at a decade old, it offers gorgeous aromas of redcurrant, crushed strawberry, tar and truffle, a discrete mineralité that only surfaces with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with superb acidity, impressive cohesion and outstanding structure (for a 2007) towards the finish. It is brimming with sophistication, class and character—one of the standout Pomerols of the vintage. Tasted February 2017. 94/100. Drink 2017-2035. The 2007 l’Eglise-Clinet was picked 20 to 24 September. It has a deep color for a 2007 with little signs of maturity on the rim. It is typical of this Pomerol cru to ignore the reputation of this growing season and manifest a convincing bouquet packed with redcurrant and cranberry fruit laced with tobacco and singed leather. The palate feels smooth and slightly candied on the entry with bright red and black fruit laced with tobacco and spice, a gradual crescendo towards a very precise finish that feels more open than coeval vintages at the moment. It is a l’Eglise-Clinet that is ready to drink but do not under-estimate how well this will age. Tasted at the l’Eglise-Clinet vertical at the château in April 2018.

This is an utterly complex and promising bouquet! The palate is terribly fresh but also rich, lush and intense, with the purity of the finest wines of the Côte de Blancs, the concentration of perfectly ripe Chardonnay and the suppleness of 2006. This has impeccable balance paired with high tension. The wine is very tight and still seems to be on its way right now. Although there is a first hint of aromatic ripeness, this should be a great Comtes de Champagne in a couple of years. The finish is tensioned, concentrated and mineral but keeps its talents in an almost bursting bubble. 96/100. Date 2020-2034.

The 2006 Comtes de Champagne is striking, especially in the way it brings together elements of ripeness and freshness in a hypothetical blend of the 2002 and 2004. Smooth and creamy on the palate, the 2006 is all about texture. There is a real feeling of density and weight in the 2006, qualities I expect to see grow with time in the bottle. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. The 2006 has been nothing short of magnificent both times I have tasted it. Comtes de Champagne remains the single best value (in relative terms) in tête de cuvée Champagne. I suggest buying a case and following it over the next 20-30 years, which is exactly what I intend to do. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, chalky and tensile, sharing a racy, chiseled profile with its Blanc de Blancs cousin. Deep, concentrated and tightly wound, the wine concludes with a long, sapid finish. This is an intense, racy Comtes Rosé with a long future ahead of it. As has been the norm chez Taittinger for several years now, the blend is based upon 70% Pinot Noir and includes 15% still red wine from Bouzy. Drink 2020-2037.

Those that waited had wonderful results”. Very fresh and beautifully delicate on the nose, even in its youth this is so captivating. Hints of floral blossoms lead into gingerbread and almond pastry which give gorgeous depth to the youthful energetic nose. Echoing the nose, the palate shows a vibrant tension combined with a fresh generosity. White fruits, golden raisins, fresh biscuits, and hints of candied mandarin. The dense core is mineral driven, intermingled with some baking spice, citrus zest and a pleasing chalky structure. Its tense, energetic profile offers up charm and precision and as it unfurls it reveals a toasty, savoury richness, hints of iodine and coriander seeds. Creamy salted butter layers the palate and there is a seam of mouth-watering mineral salinity which imparts a bright refreshing finish. Long and very persistent, it is drinking beautifully now but certainly has the power and complexity to develop into a truly exciting wine.

After the tightly coiled, hyper-concentrated 2008, Taittinger's 2011 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne represents a more immediate, charming rendition of this cuvée. Bursting from the glass with aromas of orchard and stone fruit mingled with notions of pastry cream, blanched almonds and mandarin, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and fleshy, with a soft and enveloping profile, lively acids and a pretty pinpoint mousse. Readers might think of the 2011 as a somewhat less reductive and less intense stylistic sibling of the 2006, and as it takes on more toasty complexity with bottle age, it will make for immensely seductive drinking. This epic wine is set for release on Thursday this week, so this is a sneaky preview. I imagine that hordes of merchants will be scrabbling for stock, so you should be able to track it down with ease. Let’s cut to the chase. By contrast to the Bollinger, Comte is not a one-off, nor anything out of the ordinary. It is a label that all committed Champagne lovers adore. Predictable perhaps. But, of course, one thing does vary, and that is the vintage. The ‘worst’ Comte I ever tasted was rather lovely. The ‘best’, and there have been many (1959, 1966, 1996, 2002, 2006) are all sublime and you can now add 2011 to this list. Taittinger always seems to shun the spotlight, unlike Dom Perignon and other more attention-seeking brands and this modesty rather suits this House. I did something that I never do after first tasting my sample bottle. I was so shocked with the sheer class that I sealed the bottle with a simple Champagne stopper and then tasted it again and again over two days. The stress-testing sorts the wheat from the chaff. It is unlikely that anyone who bought a bottle would do this. Still, I like to see how a potentially great wine evolves, opens up, sometimes falls over, and sometimes blossoms over a few days because it gives me an indication of its potential and its true baseline of quality. The fruit is so tense, grand and layered it is remarkable. The flavour, the fizz, the length, the momentum and the overall halo of greatness did not change one iota over nearly 60 hours of being open with no preservation whatsoever. This is a genius, B de B and while it tastes scintillating now, I am confident that it will amaze Comte fans for decades to come. Drink 2021-2050

This 100% Chardonnay sourced from the premier cru vineyards around Vertus in the Côte des Blancs is a step up in refinement and complexity and shows off the Goerg group’s skill in the cellar. Brilliant pale lemon yellow with a fine, persistent mousse. Classical Blanc de Blancs characteristics of citrus, orchard fruit, and brioche fill the glass. The palate has a satisfying creamy texture. This modestly priced Blanc de Blancs offers length, breadth and complexity. Delightful.

Taittinger Brut Réserve is one of the best valued Grande Marque Champagnes produced. Gently biscuity with notes of toasted brioche, crunchy pear and citrus notes. It is produced from 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot (Noir and Meunier) from 30-50 which is then aged for 3-4 years on its lees. Such a great diversity leads to notable consistency - the mark of a fine non-vintage Champagne.

The 2016 Cockburn’s, which comes mainly from the Bico de Pato vineyard, is deep in colour, perhaps more so than other vintages of this Port encountered during previous declaration tastings. The nose is tight at first, almost Bordeaux-like with blackberry, raspberry coulis, touches of inkwell and cassis. There is admirable purity here. The palate is beautifully balanced with supple tannin, a wonderful line of acidity and immense harmony. There is presence but not weight, a silky smooth finish with hints of raisin and fig that linger tenderly in the mouth. What a marvellous Cockburn’s! Production is 2,450 cases.

This shows fantastic graphite and dark-berry character with black-stone undertones and hints of dried roses. Full-bodied and very tight and precise. Good kick in the end. Love the polished tannins, which are totally folded into the wine. Reminds me of the 1947 Cockburn. Try in 2024.

A delicious and lip-smacking Cockburn’s, this is a floral, perfumed and toned Port with bright tannins and layered fruit. It is fit, tidy and neatly packaged and it has enough energy and richness to last the long haul. The 2016 Fonseca Vintage Port began to be picked on 21 September at their Panascal vineyard, their Quinta do Cruzeira vineyard not picked until 6 October. It is deep, almost inky in colour. The bouquet is very intense with luscious black fruit laced with embers, clove and hints of bay leaf. There is wonderful purity here and a broodiness that suggests you'd better be patient. The palate is sweet and lively on the entry with some gorgeous ginger and curry leaf notes littered over the compact black fruit. There is wonderful density to this Fonseca. It is like a coiled spring with so much energy towards the finish that you just know this will be a long-term prospect. Superb. Production is 4,900 cases.

The 2017 Dow’s Vintage Port showed a slight reduction and required more time to really open in the glass. Typical of Dow’s it has a more backward and introspective bouquet compared to its peers, scents of blackberry, clove, wild mint, cassis and vanilla, gradually gaining more intensity with aeration. The palate is simply glorious. It is built around a compelling tannic frame that seems finer than any Dow’s I have encountered apart from the ethereal 2011. There is so much energy coiled up in this Port, a sense of symmetry that is enthralling and yet you just know that it needs to be cellared for 15-20 years for it to reveal its full potential. For serious Port-lovers. One of the vintages most cerebral offerings. Total production is 5,250 cases. Drink 2030-2080

It would have been a waste, opined Schönleber, not to have done something with the impeccably clean but overripe and lightly desiccated grapes that informed this Auslese, and which would have added too much potential alcohol to the Grosses Gewächs. But there wasn’t much more juice in them than in those that had been set aside for BA and TBA – too little, in fact, for a proper day’s pressing – so subsequent incoming bunches that harbored a higher percentage of juicy grapes were added in. Peach, pear, orange and pineapple combine for an intense fresh-fruit concentrate at once luscious and tangy. The underlying feel is seductively silken, but orange zest and cinnamon lend invigorating sizzle. Mouthwatering salinity adds to the delights of a vibrant, ringingly clear finish. Drink 2020-2046.

It was aged for approximately 20 months in French oak and comes in with 97 grams of residual sugar. Fresh and lively, showing vivid fruit and a clean finish, this is also nicely lifted on the finish. It is surprisingly accessible. This is also a bit more expressive at the moment than its Serikos sibling this issue, but it's also lighter and a little less powerful. This can be one to approach young, but I wouldn't do it unless you want to sacrifice complexity and harmony. Mark Squires. Drink 2025-2060.

The 2017 Fonseca, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I'd recommend some patience here. The 2017 Taylor, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend aged for approximately 20 months in wood. It comes in with 100 grams of residual sugar. A step up (or two) on the 2016, this shows fine depth, more focus, vivid fruit and serious power. It's not particularly thick, austere or astringent, but this is built for the long haul. It is potentially a great Taylor's, effortlessly combining brilliant fruit and structure. It tastes great now (today, it is far more vivid than its Vinha Velha sibling), but the power makes this hard to drink today. So, have some patience. It will need some time, probably a lot more than indicated, and will likely last longer than indicated as well. As noted in the accompanying article, I don't see much point to impossibly long drinking windows. At some point, reevaluation is required. Mark Squires. Drink 2030-2077
