The 2019 Chapelle d’Ausone, which represents around one-third of the production, has a very expressive bouquet of well-defined red berry fruit, cedar and touches of graphite. Undergrowth and hints of sage emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and very well balanced, the Cabernet Franc (40%) again lending a real Left Bank identity toward the finish. Very fine. Drink 2025-2045

The 2019 Chapelle d'Ausone is dense, powerful and beautifully layered in the glass. Wild red cherry, plum, exotic spice, dried flowers, mocha, rose petal and espresso are some of the many notes that give the bouquet its beguiling personality. There's real textural intensity and resonance here. As has been the case for some time, Chapelle d'Ausone is superb. If anything, it suffers from the perception of being a 'second wine.' It is that only in name. Drink 2024-2039

William Kelley, April 2022, Score: 93
A blend of wine from young vines with a few barriques of declassified Ausone (though anything that doesn't make the grade is sold off in bulk), the 2019 Chapelle d'Ausone exhibits attractive aromas of cherries, sweet berry fruit, violets, spices, rose petals and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's elegant and refined, with a deep core of fruit and impeccable balance. Drink 2025 - 2045

Deep opaque colour. Stunning aromatics of fresh fig, plums and a touch of roasted coffee bean. The palate has a silky voluptuousness to it, naturally rich, with characters of winter fruits and oriental spice, the tannins sit beautifully within the fruit and the lift of fresh acidity give poise and complexity on the finish. A little beauty!

A reflection of the very best of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). Exuberant dark black fruit on the nose and hints of fresh tobacco leaf and spice. Full and sensual in the palate, with appealing rich volume and some firm Cabernet structure sitting comfortably underneath. A line of freshness on the finish is beautifully uplifting and makes for a very complete and sophisticated style. Quite lovely.

The 2019 Le Pape was picked 30 September to 11 October. Deep ruby in colour, it has a clean and precise, almost Burgundy-like bouquet with raspberry, wild strawberry and subtle loamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly creamy-textured opening that belies that structure underneath, then it segues into a distinctly saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Excellent. The 2019 Le Pape is exquisite. Floral, savory and blood orange top notes give the 2019 striking freshness to play off the natural radiance of red cherry and raspberry fruit. The balance of richness and vibrancy is compelling. Le Pape has seldom been this seductive. The 2019 is all class.

Deep garnet-purple colored, it sails out of the glass with intense scents of plum preserves, blueberry pie and boysenberries with nuances of Chinese five spice, mocha, dried lavender and licorice plus a waft of chargrill. The Sérafins own a third of a hectare of this Grand Cru across two different parcels: one within Mazoyères Chambertin and the other in Charmes Chambertin. The wine flows through the mouth as both the tannins and layers of fruit caress the palate. With extraordinary definition, this lingers on the finish and in the memory almost forever. Named after the source of a spring to the village, this vineyard has a natural supply of moisture, and the east/west aspect of the vineyard ensures exposure to sunshine throughout the day proving a fine advantage in the cooler 2021 summer. Dark black fruits, cassis and blackberry. There is a noticeable substance to this high-class wine, the tannins are fine, whilst remaining present. Delicious volume on the finish, and a final impression of poise and persistence.

Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 91-93
A little fresher and deeper in purple, with the same mild reduction, though the oak is less apparent. Excellent intensity, a dark bright fruit with a good thread of acidity and tannins which though present are not too marked. There is a suggestion of a blood red fruit behind. Drink from 2028-2036.

Robert Parker, June 2004, Score: 92
The 2000 was the finest Lascombes produced in over three decades, and the 2001 continues the great success this estate is enjoying under the guidance of Yves Vatelot (of Chateau Reignac) and Dr. Alain Raynaud (Chateau Quinault l'Enclos). A blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5%Petit Verdot, it spent 18 months in cask (4 on its lees), and was bottled unfiltered. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by ripe aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, and cassis. Medium-bodied, stylish, and elegant, with sweet tannin, impressive concentration, tremendous persistence as well as flavor intensity, and a 40+ second finish, this noble claret should be at its finest between 2005-2016.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of two lieux-dits, La Violette with 40% whole bunch and Quartier de Nuits with nary a stem. It has fine delineation and focus on the nose, very pure and with the appellation’s trademark floral lift. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, silky smooth but maybe it does not quite expand like the excellent Morey-Saint-Denis on the finish. Still, this should drink well over the next decade.

Coulis-like aromas of plum, wild black cherry, Asian-style tea and sandalwood give way to rich, even opulent, flavors that retain ample punch on the surprisingly powerful, concentrated and impressively long if youthfully austere finish. This too is an excellent villages and well-worth your interest.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely

Ripe and attractively fresh aromas include those of black cherry coulis, spice and violet. The very rich and generously proportioned medium weight flavors possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the textured and lingering finish where the supporting tannins are a bit raspy.

Rightly considered the senior statesman of the Grand Crus in Gevrey along with Le Chambertin. This is a hugely stylish wine, with great levels of finesse. Yet it remains succulent and the fruit texture coats the mouth. An exquisite style defining the higher echelons that the best Grand Crus achieve.

A classic Bèze and well worth considering. 92-95)/2023+

(from a 1.5 ha parcel that is almost entirely in terres rouges). A beautifully complex and far ranging nose offers up notes of warm earth, spices and a lovely combination of red berry aromas. Here too there is mild reduction which renders the nose difficult to assess in depth though again the underlying fruit appears to be ripe. This is very old school in style and will require ample patience for it to develop, yet will be well worth the wait. Drink 2023+

The 2012 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a slightly earthier bouquet compared to some of the others encountered, but it remains well defined with citrus fruit and orange peel emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. This is very pure and generous with a lush dark chocolate, mocha-tinged finish that is showing too much oak at present, but that will be absorbed with time. Seductive.

(from a .30 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines that sit directly behind the cuvérie). Here the wood is a bit more prominent though not so much as to override the very spicy and complex array of game, red and dark currant and pungent earth aromas. There is excellent volume and intensity to the concentrated and once again overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of power, punch and impressive scale, but here too the finish is slightly edgy and drying. The powerful, concentrated and exceptionally rich broad-shouldered flavors possess plenty of muscle as the dense but fine mouth coating tannins will require all of 12 years to completely resolve even though I suspect that it will be approachable in its youth. Due to be bottled the following week, the 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Champans has a flattering bouquet of redcurrant, cranberry and pomegranate fruit interlaced with undergrowth aromas that lend it a slightly rustic feel. Francois says “a little earthy - you see it from a far…something in the soil and then this develops as the wine ages.”

The wood influence is a bit more pronounced though not so much as to intrude on the spicy and cool nose of plum, violet, dark cherry and Asian-style tea scents. There is excellent punch and delineation to the larger-scaled flavors that possess good richness and a caressing mouthfeel, all wrapped in a sappy and long finish where the oak telegraphed by the nose resurfaces. This is on the oakier side at present but appears to have the underlying material to eventually absorb it and my projected range implicitly assumes that it will.
