En Primeur | Ch de Marsannay

This impressive estate, like Château de Meursault, is owned by Olivier Halley. It is a substantial property, comprising 40 hectares, of which 28 are in Marsannay and the remainder are spread throughout prime locations in the Côte de Nuits and as far south as Puligny Montrachet. With the guidance of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet of Château de Meursault, new technical director Sylvain Pabiot has been implementing exciting changes at the property. They are currently in the process of converting to organic vineyard management and Sylvain has instigated a more delicate approach in the winery for the Pinots.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Sourced from 3.5 hectares of village-level vineyards that are positioned in mid-slope, this cuvée provides a lively, pretty example of Marsannay Blanc. Open and enticing, bright notes of confit lemons, grapefruit peel and yellow plums sing out of the glass. Ripe, succulent and creamy on the palate, this is a generous white with a very pleasing texture. Softly glimmering acidity supports the fruit through to a mouth-watering finish. Easy drinking and highly approachable.

The fruit for this Puligny comes from a 0.5-hectare plot located on the lower slopes of the appellation. The 2023 has beguiling notes of white blossom, sun-ripened greengages, lemon curd and a just a hint of toasted hazelnut. Rounded and generous upfront, there is a vibrant, driving acidity at the wine’s core that brings a distinct wet pebble minerality. A hint of stony smokiness on the finish adds a further complexity to this eminently charming Chardonnay.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, January 2025

This cuvee is a blend of fruit from 14 different terroirs across the commune of Marsannay and as such is a great expression of the overall Marsannay style. The 2023 shows bright, lifted notes of ripe red cherries and raspberries with a pretty overlay of white pepper spice and dried wild herbs. With rounded, plush and juicy red fruit at its core, this is an immediately approachable Pinot with just the right amount of fine-grained, chalky tannin to provide interest and depth. Charming and very reflective of both the vintage and village.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 89-91

A blend from 8ha of vineyards, making a 50,000 bottle cuvée. This has been racked and blended, for bottling in the early Spring. An impressive core of purple colour, with raspberry and concentrated cherry on the nose, energy too on the palate, good acidity and length, this will extend nicely at the finish. Drink from 2026-2029.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The vineyard of Le Boivin is centrally located in Marsannay and has a complex patchwork of soils, which include Comblanchien marble, a band of limestone and an outcrop of marl. Château de Marsannay own 0.7 hectares of old vines here, making this a cuvée of abundant depth and complexity. The 2023 shows a wealth of black cherry and dark forest fruit notes, along with hints of bitter almond, graphite and a wild, savouriness. Ripe and densely concentrated, this is a muscular wine with plenty of structure and power. Ripe, fine-grained tannins sit alongside vibrant acidity as the wine finishes on a peppery lift.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 91-93

Three quarters whole bunch. Shorter cuvaison 10-12 days for this wine (compared to a typical two weeks or a touch more). A fine plump purple, never a problem getting colour here, the vines are almost straight on the rocks, with very low yields. The bouquet is stunning, reminiscent of upper end Chambolle, now avoiding puree de fruits. Finely balanced across the palate, a little white pepper to finish, a racy wine of fine pedigree. Drink from 2028-2033.

Château de Marsannay own 0.29 hectares of this vineyard site, which is located in the middle of the slope towards the northern end of the Côte St Jacques. Soils here are best described as mixed and are renowned for producing flamboyant, fruit-driven wines that bring immediate, undemanding pleasure. The 2023 certainly conforms to this archetype, with bright and enticing notes of raspberry, red plums and bitter cherries. Fleshy, generous and rounded on the palate, a lovely volume of fruit is supported by fine-boned acidity and a lift of mineral tension. A light chalkiness to the fine-grained tannins brings texture and grip to the finish.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 91-93

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru has a slightly more savory nose with baked cherries and touches of forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced with powdery tannins. It is not a powerful Gevrey, but there is refinement and persistence on the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 91-93

Mid ruby purple. The nose has a light reduction still. Floral too, with elegance to the fresh red berry fruit on the palate. Some wood tannins at the back, and very much a red fruit, with some strawberry, to finish. Drink from 2029-2034.

2023 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru Ch de Marsannay

At the northern end of the Gevrey Grands Crus, Ruchottes is divided into two distinct sections; the Clos Ruchottes, which is owned entirely by Domaine Armand Rousseau, and the lower part of the vineyard, which looks like a rectangular notch taken out of neighbouring Mazis. Hailing from lower Ruchottes, Château de Marsannay’s vines are planted into highly rocky soils dating from the Bathonian period. Dense and brooding on the nose, this wine needs time in the glass to show its interwoven aromas of black cherry, black forest fruits, savoury oak spice and black pepper. On the palate, this is a hugely concentrated, tightly coiled Pinot that has a powerful, muscular presence. Firm yet velvety tannins coral the dense black fruit, whilst a vibrant, mineral-driven acidity brings energy and verve. A sophisticated wine that needs time to unfurl its true potential.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2023 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a refined bouquet that opens up nicely in the glass to reveal a mélange of red and black fruit, brown spices and sous-bois. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly confit-like black fruit on the entry. It is quite juicy for a Ruchottes, perhaps missing the mineralité of, say, Mugneret-Gibourg or Roumier. Yet, there is admirable length here as a dash of black pepper lingers on the aftertaste.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 95-97

Glowing purple, significant whole bunch. A beautiful nose, all the delicate joys of Ruchottes but with remarkable energy as well. Mostly a bright elegant red fruit, alpine strawberry, with a couple of darker raspberry notes at the back and an extremely long finish. Drink from 2029-2037.

Located in Le Marei Haut, planted in 1921. They are trying out higher palissage (training) from this winter but just up to 1.50m, so not a whole different game changer. More red fruit, including strawberry, attractive, perhaps not quite as complex. But interestingly perfumed, with a cherry note coming through. Drink from 2030-2036.
