En Primeur | Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The delightful château and its gardens designed by Le Nôtre are a beautiful backdrop for this historic estate, which has been in Nicolay family ownership since 1834. The wines, like the property, have an extraordinary elegance and poise to them. They are impressive without excess. The family can be rightly proud of being one of the frontrunners practicing organic farming from the early 1990s and, since 2005, they have moved across to biodynamic viticulture.

The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc Île de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from a parcel planted in the 1980s by Nadine de Nicolay toward the top of the hill. This has plenty of fresh Conference pear and white peachy scents on the nose, well defined and quite generous. The palate has a rounded texture and is slightly lower in acidity compared to other vintages. Pear and nectarine emerge toward the finish. Very seductive.

Mid lemon, this has settled down, a much cleaner bouquet, apple and citrus but well balanced and very long. Nothing sulphured, and doesn’t need it at the moment. Really engaging and I haven’t been such a fan of chardonnay in the Ile de Vergelesses. A long flowing citrus laden wine with a saline finish. Staying with me. Picked 1st September., which feels like the perfect date. 12.7%.

  • GWL, December 2024

With such a large holding in this Premier Cru (2.55 hectares), the domaine have turned part of their acreage over to Chardonnay. A cooler site with clay limestone soils, this wine always tends towards a floral and elegant expression of this grape variety. Open and pretty, this wine shows bright notes of lemon curd and yellow plums with additional complexity coming from hints of both white blossom and toasted almond. The creamy texture of the palate is lifted by vibrant, stone-inflected acidity and a lovely touch of spiciness on the very finish.

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux is a blend of two terroirs from the same parcel, one of them Premier Cru. It offers nicely defined blackcurrant and raspberry fruit on the nose. The palate has strong blackcurrant notes and fine acidity, not complex but nicely balanced and decently long. Fine.

Bottled last week. A ripe bright deep purple. The first thing that comes across is the amazing sensuality of the nose, super-ripe fruit which is nonetheless tamed by the stem effect. Natural acidity from the earlier picked young vines. The most sensual ripe cherries and strawberries. The stems also give structure to the mid palate, and refresh the finish which does not have very high acidity. Lovely aftertaste.

  • GWL, December 2024

The village-level Fournaux in this cuvée is given extra oomph by the inclusion of a proportion of old vine fruit from the Premier Cru section of this same vineyard. As Claude herself states, this is a “super village”, overdelivering against its humble appellation. The 2023 shows an aromatic and beguiling nose with notes of black cherry and sun-warmed raspberries that are underpinned by a smoky minerality almost reminiscent of graphite. There is a lovely volume of fruit sweetness here, which nonetheless allows a stony freshness to shine through. A gentle framework of ripe tannins leaves a pleasing, chalky grip on the finish.

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru, which had just been bottled, comes from vines planted in 1956. Apparently, the fruit suffered a little shriveling. It has an open and expressive bouquet with red berry fruit, quite cool and well-defined. The palate bears the mark of the warmth at harvest, with slight figgy notes in the background that just deviate this cuvée away from Pinot Noir and dial down the tension. This is another for early consumption.

The vines run parallel with the road into Savigny, so one side of the rows faces south and where grapes had got wrinkled in the sun they were rejected. Those on the other side looked impeccable. An imperial purple colour, with an almost unbearably seductive bouquet with an incredibly rich raspberry flavour. Less structure behind, so this will be an early drinker 13.8%. In bottle. I am resisting 5 stars because these may not be long keepers (but they may also surprise).

  • GWL, December 2024

The domaine own a sizeable 2.6-hectare plot in this Premier Cru, which is named after the slabs, or ‘laves’, of clay that make up its soils, and some of their vines date back as far as 1956. The combination of clay soils and old-vine fruit gives a plush cuvée with plenty of character and complexity. Layered and intriguing on the nose, this wine sings with notes of Morello cherry, sun-ripened raspberries, dried wild herbs and a crunch of fresh black pepper. Sumptuous fruit sweetness is underpinned by a shimmering line of acidity and seamless, velvety tannins. A delicious expression of Pinot that is both generous and elegant.

The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Île de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from a parcel purchased by the family's great-grandmother, located on more limestone-heavy soils than the Les Vergelesses. It has a much more minerally bouquet with vivacious red cherry and raspberry fruit. The palate is ripe and generous with kirsch, Morello cherries and very light fig notes toward the finish.

In barrel, blended. A rich purple colour, the nose shows a slightly higher volatile which adds a nutty element to the fruit on the nose, but this has not yet been cleaned up for bottling either. The fruit profile is just on the blacker side of the cusp with red berries. Leaves a lingering fine rich red and black cherry aftertaste.

  • GWL, December 2024

This 4-hectare plot of 50-year-old vines is the family’s pride and joy, and plays an ambassadorial role for the commune of Pernand Vergelesses, much as the hill of Corton does for its namesake appellation. Pretty and engaging notes of red cherry and raspberry are in evidence here, alongside a perfumed hint of violets and a spicy touch of white pepper. Rounded, compact fruit sweetness is held aloft by energetic mineral tension and fine-boned, supple tannin. Although this wine has power and presence, it remains subtle and leaves a lasting impression of elegance and poise.

Picked on 7th September, not yet in bottle. A central dark purple with more of a ruby rim. Quite a different bouquet because the fruit has a wilder side, wood strawberries, blueberries, than the usual berry fruits. Claude loves this wine! The stems give their little brambly note as well. A touch of bramble jelly on the palate but the structure holds this all well together. 13.8% with a long supple finish, alongside adequate tannins.

  • GWL, December 2024

The fruit for this Grand Cru comes from four sources within the Bressandes vineyard; two close to Ladoix, where the soils have a high clay content, and two closer to Aloxe Corton, which enjoy a higher percentage of limestone. These radically different soil types combine to give a very complete Pinot, and the 2023 proves no exception. With inviting notes of black cherry, forest fruits, violet, and spicy black pepper, this wine entices from the outset. Layers of lush ripe fruit are wrapped around architectural tannins, while wet-stone acidity ensures the wine vibrates with tension and drive. Although overtly structured, this is an accomplished, elegant wine that wears its muscular framework lightly.

First picked, and the first bottled, at the very end of September. It was taken out of wood before the tannins began to dry the wine. A fine mid purple with lighter rim. This is the least obviously rich of the 2023 reds. Quite a refined red fruit nose, back to more classical strawberries, with a floral edge, then useful tannins in part from the stems. Adequate acidity, and a refined stylish finish.

At 300 metres this steep vineyard close to Corton Charlemagne is the highest in altitude, facing east and containing a high proportion of clay-limestone marl. Claude describes this as the most “aristocratic wine” in their portfolio. A wine which combines florality and perfume alongside a very distinctive structure and backbone, guaranteeing longevity.
