2023 Mercurey Vieilles Vignes Vincent et Jean-Pierre Charton
£240.00 In Bond £332.66 Inc VAT (£27.72 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
This old vine cuvée comes from a selection of sites within the village of Mercurey. A medley of wild black forest fruits and vanilla and spiced oak nuances. Strikingly juicy and succulent , with a sweet mouth coating richness. Delicious early drinking.

Burghound, October 2024, Score: 87-90
Once again the nose is firmly reduced. The supple and delicious middle weight flavors are more refined but, somewhat surprisingly, are not denser while firming up on the austere, rustic and more structured finale. This does offer more cellar potential but overall, isn't necessarily more qualitatively interesting than the Champ de Perdrix.

2023 Mercurey 1er Cru La Chassiere Vincent et Jean-Pierre Charton
£165.00 In Bond £220.33 Inc VAT (£36.72 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
Vincent affectionately refers to this cuvee as his ‘petit Volnay’ and upon tasting it is easy to see why. A Pinot of poise and finesse, there are aromas of Morello cherry and black berried fruit, while the palate exudes dark fruits and an earthiness that adds a serious edge. With burnished tannins and delicate oak spice, this is a Mercurey which gets straight to the point.

This is also quite firmly reduced and revealing nothing aromatically. The rich, round and velvet-textured medium weight flavors are wonderfully refined while possessing an inner mouth perfume as well as good authority on the complex, dusty and moderately structured finish. This is really quite pretty and if tasted blind, a wine that could pass for a quality Volnay.

2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Naugues Vincent et Jean-Pierre Charton
£165.00 In Bond £220.33 Inc VAT (£36.72 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
With nine-hundred vines of 70-years-old, Les Naugues is one of Charton’s most prized vineyards and takes pride of place at the front of the winery. Here the deep clay soils help create a gloriously full and rich Mercurey, displaying aromas of black cherry, crushed black pepper, and liquorice. The palate possesses power with structured tannins, yet there is lovely bright berry fruit and freshness on the finish.

Burghound, October 2024, Score: 91-93
A very pretty, indeed almost perfumed, nose freely speaks of cool, pure and elegant aromas of red cherry, currant, crushed anise and a violet top note. The heightened sense of refinement continues onto the nicely detailed and overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a lovely texture that carries over to the youthfully austere, firm and balanced finale. This is excellent and while it's constructed to repay at least a decade of keeping, I suspect that it will be approachable after only 4 to 5 years if you don't have the patience to wait until full maturity.

2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy Vincent et Jean-Pierre Charton
£170.00 In Bond £226.33 Inc VAT (£37.72 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
As the name suggests, Clos du Roy is considered the most regal of all the Mercurey Premier Crus. In keeping with Charton’s style, the 2023 has a dark profile, where flavours of black cherry and wild raspberry are beautifully framed by tender tannins and subtle smoke. Thanks to a combination of marl and chalk soils, there is considerable power here, with a Pommard-esque power to the wine that will be well-received by fans of the appellation.

Burghound, October 2024, Score: 90-93
This too is completely reduced. By contrast, there is good vibrancy to the round, velvety and caressing medium-bodied flavors that are also supported by firm but relatively fine tannins on the serious, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale that displays focused power. This is potentially excellent and worth considering.
