Salicutti | 2020 Brunello di Montalcino

Dubbed the "Holy Grail of Sangiovese purity" by Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, Salicutti has benefitted from heavy investment in the winery’s infrastructure by Munich based restaurateur owners, Felix and Sabine Eichbauer. With the state-of-the-art winery now complete, and biodynamic viticulture well underway, it hasn’t gone unnoticed by the critics that the quality of what is produced here has scaled new heights. At only 4.5 hectares in size, the volumes released onto the market are incredibly small in comparison to other Brunello growers. Our visit there last year revealed a set of 2020s that are built on purity, terroir and finesse allied to the trademark structure that we have come to expect from Salicutti. These are wines that will age gracefully for many years to come.

The 1.2-hectare Piaggione vineyard sits at 420-450 metres of elevation. Normally we might expect a darker and more restrained style in youth, however the 2020 is built on finesse. It displays gorgeous elegant red fruit flavours and a distinct silkiness to the palate. As it grows in the glass the trademark mineral and crushed stone character begin to emerge, yet it remains finely poised in the mouth. This is a knock out Piaggione that is terroir-driven and supple.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 93

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is drop-dead gorgeous, with a wonderfully fresh and lively bouquet of crushed strawberries and cherries elevated by hints of sweet Christmas spice, mint and rhubarb. Seductively round and supple, it flows across the palate with ease as juicy acidity enlivens its red and blue fruits. The 2020 doesn't miss a beat, leaving a spicy and tart sensation that keeps the mouth watering despite the edgy tannins. Already gorgeous today, the Piaggione will enjoy a long and broad drinking window.

  • AF, January 2025, Score: 96

From the steepest site of the estate, with a southern exposure, the magenta/ruby-colored 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Piaggione is concentrated with gorgeous aromas of Amarena cherries, pure sweet herbs, smoky stones, and a polished feel. It's full-bodied on the palate but feels weightless, with refined, velvety tannins and a long finish. It's very finessed and quite impressive. The producers were leaning toward a more finessed approach in this vintage that comes through in the wine without sacrificing anything for the ripeness, texture, and feel of the wine. Bravo. Drink 2026-2050.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, November 2024, Score: 94

Ripe dark-skinned fruit, violet, dark exotic spice and forest floor aromas come to the forefront. Full-bodied and firm, the palate delivers cherries marinated in spirits, raspberry jam, mocha and licorice set against a backbone of close-grained tannins. Drink 2029–2034.

  • Monica Larner, November 2024, Score: 95

The Salicutti 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione focuses mostly on red fruit flavors, and it shows elegant, chalky tannins with blue flower and crushed stone. There's a point of white peppercorn on the close. From compact, mineral-rich soils, this wine is all about smoothness and silkiness, and that's the very first impression it makes on the palate. It appears even silkier and finer the longer it stays in the glass.

Formerly a vineyard designated to Rosso di Montalcino under the previous owner Francesco Leanza, Sorgente has developed over several years into an exceptional single vineyard Brunello. The 2020 is laden with dark raspberry and rose petal scents on a firm structured palate. To us it perfectly showcases the incredible advances that have been made at Salicutti under the Eichbauers.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 94

Darker and more serious than the Piaggione tasted alongside it, the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente opens with an earthy mix of mentholated herbs, rose petals and black raspberries. It's lifted, ethereal and refined, with hints of white pepper complicating its ripe wild berry fruit notes. A kiss of sour citrus adds a tug of tension toward the close. Violet and lavender tones resonate as the 2020 finishes with dramatic length, leaving a web of fine tannins and a tart cranberry concentration that pinches at the cheeks.

  • AF, January 2025, Score: 95

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Sorgente pours a jeweled ruby color and is aromatic of crushed flowers, ripe berries, dark stones, and a light hint of saddle leather. Medium to full-bodied, it expands on the palate, with ripe tannins, even freshness, and a long finish. It's a lovely Brunello that's going to improve over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2020 Sorgente has earthy aromas recalling tilled soil, underbrush, game, leather and truffle that mingle with whiffs of ripe black plum and violet. The aromas carry over to the concentrated, full-bodied palate along with dried black cherry and licorice. Velvety tannins provide supple support before a drying finish. Drink 2026–2032.

  • Monica Larner, November 2024, Score: 94

The Salicutti 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente shows bright fruit and lots of energy with wild cherry and blackcurrant. Fruit is sourced from a site with sandstone at 320 meters in elevation. The tannins are silky, and the wine extends long over the palate thanks to the momentum it gains from its fruit and its acidity. It ages in oak for three years for elegant and finessed results.

With the 2019 vintage the tiny Teatro plot has truly come of age. The galestro soils interspersed with flecks of quartz have produced a wine of wonderful texture and elegance. Wild red berries and redcurrants with lifted floral tones have given the Teatro a distinct prettiness this year. It could easily develop into one of the leading 2019 releases with extra maturity.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 95+

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Teatro Riserva entices as a whiff of sweet mint and exotic spice gives way to citrus-laced blackberries and hints of black tea. This is lifted and graceful in feel, with soft textures and juicy wild berry fruits that swirl beneath an air of inner violet florals and lavender tones. Remarkably pretty from start to finish, the 2019 tapers off long and perfumed, leaving a sensation of liquid stone and the mouth watering for more. Don't come here for power and intensity; this beauty is built on elegance.

  • AF, January 2025, Score: 97

The ruby red 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Teatro slowly starts to reveal notes of licorice, black raspberries, violets, and forested earth. It's ripe and full-bodied, with plush, ripe tannins and a delicate warmth through the long finish. It has a great deal of longevity ahead. Drink 2026-2050.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, November 2024, Score: 98

Vibrant and structured, the classy Teatro Riserva offers aromas of Mediterranean scrub, purple flower, juniper and dark spice. Loaded with finesse, the full-bodied palate is also loaded with flavor, featuring ripe Morello cherry, spiced plum, licorice and a hint of coffee bean. Firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide support.

  • Monica Larner, November 2024, Score: 97

This wine is now classified as a Riserva. In the bottle with the black wax capsule, the Salicutti 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Teatro shows aromas of tea leaf and chamomile along with very pretty floral impressions that cede to wild berry and redcurrant. The Salicutti house style interpreted by owners Sabine and Felix Eichbauer stresses fruit nuance and floral intensity. From galestro soils with quartz, the wine offers a very fine texture that is absolutely seamlessly delivered. There's a hint of candied raspberry on the close.
