  • Robert Parker, April 2002, Score: 95

The 1999 is the greatest Palmer made since 1961, 1966, 1970, 1983, and 1989. It is one of the superstars of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It boasts a staggering bouquet of violets and other spring flowers intermixed with licorice, black currants, and subtle wood. Only 50% of the production made it into the grand vin. This is a multidimensional, compelling effort with both power and elegance, it offers sweet tannin along with flavors that caress the palate, and a 45-second finish. This is terrific stuff! Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025.

  • Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 92-94

A brilliant success, Palmer's 1999 is a blend of 46% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot (only 58% of the harvest made it into the final wine), it boasts an opaque blue/purple color as well as sweet aromas of licorice, jammy cassis, smoke, lead pencil, and minerals. Surprisingly tannic for the vintage, this muscular, gorgeously proportioned, classic effort should be one of the wines of the vintage ... at least in the Medoc. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025.

  • Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 90-93

Palmer, which harvested between September 17 and October 1, has produced one of the vintage's stars. Much of the Merlot came in before the heavy rain, and the fruit was so ripe this is the first vintage in over thirty years in which there was no need to chaptalize. The blend, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot, has produced a dense, opaque purple-colored wine with an opulent personality. Drink: 2000 - 2020.

  • Clive Coates, April 2003, Score: 19

Full colour. Very lovely nose. Gently oaky. Rich and complex, profound and elegant. This is super. Medium-full body. Quietly complex and composed. Really splendid ripe, rich, concentrated, multi-dimensional fruit. Very harmonious. Very long. Very fine plus. Drink: 2009 - 2025+

Producer

Château Palmer

Château Palmer has many followers. Indeed in certain vintages it even rivals Château Margaux itself. Its 1961 was one of the most compelling wines of the vintage outperforming most first growths. Many deem this château far more noble than its original classified third growth status which can be confirmed by its price.

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
