  • Goedhuis, April 2001

It is wonderful to see Ch. Gruaud Larose back on the superb form it enjoyed in the1980s. The 2000 is perfectly balanced with reserves of autumnal fruit, with earthy, truffled notes.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 91

The 2000 Gruaud Larose is a vintage that I have not tasted for some 10 years. It has a somehow sedate bouquet of dark red berry fruit, cola and tobacco scents, ever so slightly smudged with age. The mellow, soy-tinged palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins and fine acidity but maybe just a little sauvage on the ferrous, slightly bretty finish. I feel this had more pep several years ago.

  • Robert Parker, June 2010, Score: 94

A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Spicy, earthy, full-bodied, and rich, it has hit its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for another 20 or more years.

  • Robert Parker, April 2003, Score: 94

This saturated bluish-black/purple-colored wine seems at first closed and broodingly backward. In the mouth, it is dense, textured, full-bodied, pure, yet, at the same time, closed. This wine is large-sized, with high tannin but equally high extract and richness. The wine will require patience, and seems to me to be the best effort Gruaud Larose has put forth since their sumptuous 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

  • Jancis Robinson, February 2005, Score: 17

Full and splendid spicy nose. Some of the heaviest tannins of the appellation - quite brave in view of current fashion. The fruit currently seems a little overwhelmed by these inky tannins. Definitely made for the long term. Very deep purplish crimson, though not right out to the rim. Very broad nose. Relatively evolved. Absolutely classic Médoc nose. Piercing aromas with a dry spine. Minerals. Silky, open, lovely texture. Very tough tannins underneath, but there is quite enough ripe, almost opulent, fruit to carry them. Very, very classic Gruaud-Larose. Very dry finish. Lovely, classic wine - cedary. Drink 2009-2025

  • Clive Coates, June 2001

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. 45% of the total in the grand vin. Fine colour. Rich, solid nose. Profound. Doesn't seem to chunky. Full body. Vigorous.Quite tannic. But very good grip. The tannins don't dominate. Very good fruit. Perhaps a slightabsence of real richness and real finesse. But a positive finish. Quite chunky, as usual. Very good plus. From 2012.

Gruaud Larose is one of the most dispersed châteaux. The estate is almost like a hamlet unto itself, with stone building after stone building all decorating the property like life-sized Monopoly board pieces. Reviewing its family history, it is easy to understand why. For many years it had been shuffled from one owner to the next, subsequently divided, pieced back together only to be divided again. After all these divisions and transformations, the estate stands today at 150 hectares, 82 of which are planted with vines. Its current owners, the Merlaut family, purchased the château in 1997. Their other holdings include Chasse Spleen, La Gurgue, Haut Bages Libéral, Citran and Ferrière. Considerable financial investment has contributed to the château's new found dynamism. Not only is it one of the more self-sufficient châteaux in Bordeaux, it is also one of the most natural. Practicing organic techniques, they create their own compost from the remnant stalks, skins and seeds and were the first château to recycle their own water.Read less

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
