  • Goedhuis, April 2003

Ch Margaux has never had so much Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend ( 86% ) and this wine is the very essence of that grape. Winemaker Paul Pontallier rates the 2002 ahead of 2001 and 1999. With intense blackcurrant fruit, simple purity, extraordinary length and typically fine tannins, this is a splendid Margaux.

  • Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 93

Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn't it?), this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in a style somewhat reminiscentof the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. It has a beautifully elegant nose of black fruits intermixed with truffle, flower, and oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, with wonderful precision, freshness, and a long, full-bodied finish with impressive levels of concentration. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030

  • James Suckling, April 2003, Score: 92-94

Lovely mineral, berry, cherry and currant aromas. Very perfumed. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins and a seductive finish. Very refined indeed. Almost 95-100.

Producer

Château Margaux

Known as the most elegant and aromatic First Growth due to its Cabernet-friendly, sandy soil, Château Margaux is owned by the Mentzelopoulos family. The estate's vineyard holdings amount to almost 200 acres, though a much smaller percentage is selected for the grand vin to ensure exceptional concentration.

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
