    Denis Durantou was in engaging, smiling form when we popped into his winery next to the Pomerol graveyard the other day. He has been making extraordinary wines at L'Eglise Clinet since the mid 1980s, wines that are only rivalled by Cheval Blanc and Ausone.Super-stylish with great intensity of flavour and a polished, svelte structure, it was one of the most exciting wines that we tasted. Very intense and poised it is as Bordelais in style as the 2003 was Mediterranean. Probably our pick of the Right Bank. Drink 2012-2025Highly recommended.

    A brilliant effort from proprietor Denis Durantou, this classic Pomerol reveals a dark purple color as well as sweet aromas of raspberries, black cherries, cassis, and hints of caramel and vanilla. It is made in a layered, medium to full-bodied style with moderately high tannin, and superb concentration, structure, and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025

    A significant improvement over the somewhat stark 2003, Denis Durantou has fashioned a pure, deep ruby/purple-colored 2004 offering up notes of black cherry and cassis liqueur interwoven with a hint of licorice. The wood component discretely seasons this beautifully pure, medium to full-bodied Pomerol. With superb stuffing, nobleness, and pedigree, this wine will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. The dense purple-hued 2004 L'Eglise Clinet exhibits classic truffle-infused black raspberry andcherry fruit, a hint of vanilla, a sweet, expansive attack and mid-palate, and a long, opulent, full-bodied, moderately tannic finish. This beauty should be long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

    Very deep crimson. Leaps out of the glass with a fan of ripe flavours (just 10 per cent Cabernet Franc) – really quite full of life, very fresh yet very ripe with some dark purple fruit flavours. Ripeness spreads across the palate most impressively until some neat, dry tannins insist on the finish. Very competently made. Very neat. Not skinny. Drink 2014-2026

The most famous of the Pomerol "Clinets", L'Eglise Clinet has been run by the Durantou family for 5 generations. It was the wonderful Denis Durantou who catapulted this château skywards when he took over in 1983. He very sadly died in 2020, but he leaves behind him an incredible legacy. Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
