Along with Pichon Lalande, this estate was only one of two Pauillacs to be classified as second growths in 1855. They have rivalled each other ever since. However, Pichon Baron has remained in the shadow of its more illustrious neighbour often enabling it to provide good value for money.Comprised of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, Pichon Baron's 2005 brimswith opulence and velvety tannin. This is hedonistic and fleshy with good concentration and notable berry fruit flavours. Drink 2012-2030.
The 2005 Pichon-Baron is showing impressively after 13 years. It boasts intense black cherry, raspberry coulis, graphite and mineral scents that gain intensity in the glass. There is nuance and detail here, perhaps more than any previous release of this Second Growth. The masculine palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and an insistent grip in the mouth, indicative of its long-term intentions. The mineralité surfaces in a second half that demonstrates great tension and energy. There is considerably more length than previous vintages, and superior precision. An outstanding 2005 that deserves several more years in bottle. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. Drink: 2020 - 2055.
The 2005 Pichon Baron has a dense ruby/purple color, sweet crème de cassis fruit, lots of cedar wood and forest floor, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a long finish of a good 30+ seconds. This is a beauty and one of the most successful Pauillacs of this vintage. Drink it now through 2035.
As usual, this superb Pauillac possesses an inky/blue/black color in addition to a big, sweet nose of graphite, charcoal, burning embers, black currant liqueur, and toasty vanillin from new oak casks. Full-bodied with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, the 2005 Pichon Baron is more backward than the blockbuster 2003 or prodigious 2000. Nevertheless, it is a superb effort whose power, length, and tannic structure suggest it should be at its peak between 2015-2035.
A deep blue/purple color is followed by classic, sweet aromas of blueberries, creme de cassis, graphite, incense, spring flowers, and toasty vanillin from new oak. With full body and beautiful ripeness, purity, and depth, this atypically precocious 2005 will benefit from 6-8 years of bottle age, and last for 25-30 years. It is dramatically superior to its across the road neighbor, Pichon Lalande. Drink 2013-2037
Yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare and a final blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc have produced a black/purple-colored 2005 boasting gorgeous intensity as well as sweet, classic creme de cassis notes interwoven with incense, camphor, and graphite. Powerful and full-bodied with abundant glycerin, high tannin, endearing freshness and sweetness, and a long, 45-second finish, this hefty (13.6% alcohol) Pauillac should be at its finest between 2012-2030+.
Very deep crimson. Something oddly animal on the nose. Then fresh simple black fruit and very marked tannins. Not comfortable on the palate at the moment but there is a lot locked in there. One to watch - just a little note of alcohol on the finish. Something slightly diffuse about it. Drink 2016-24.
Lovely blackberry and toasted oak character follows through to a full-bodied palate, with round and juicy tannins and a long, very fruity finish. Yummy. Not sure this is up to 2003, but clearly outstanding.
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
