  • Goedhuis, May 2007, Score: 89-91

With notable concentration and structure, it is dense with a closed fruit core and a fresh finish. There is a lot going on, but it may take a few years of cellaring to express itself and open up. One to watch.

  • Robert Parker, February 2009, Score: 92

It is no longer an insider's secret that the investments made by the Rothschild family (of Lafite)in Duhart Milon are paying big dividends. A shrewd Pauillac lover's delight, it possessesexceptional quality, yet the price remains fair. This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, only 50% made it into the final blend, displays some of Lafite's classic notes of leadpencil shavings, cedar, and black currants along with more earthy, roasted herb, and spice box characteristics. Rich, full-bodied, dense, and already approachable, it should evolve easily for two decades. Good value.

  • Robert Parker, May 2007, Score: 91-93

Not surprisingly, this estate's owner, the Rothschild family (who also owns Lafite-Rothschild), hasbeen making significant investments in Duhart's winemaking facilities and vineyards. Theseinvestments helped create a blockbuster 2003 and 2005 as well as an outstanding 2006. Eliminating 50% of the crop produced a 1986-ish blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot exhibiting notes of creme de cassis, pain grille, black cherries, and undertones of loamy earth, herbs, and spice. Copious richness and up-front fruit (the latter a characteristic of the vintage) along with good freshness and liveliness suggest this Pauillac will be at its finest between 2012-2025.

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2007, Score: 16+

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc.Notably deep crimson with a pale rim. Not much nose though it gives the impression of some density underneath. Quite well handled but pretty tough and embryonic as though this wine got all the press wine. Pretty severe and at this stage ungracious. Obviously more ambitious than the Armailhac from the same, Mouton stable but all structure and no fruit for the moment.

Producer

Château Duhart-Milon

Owned since 1962 by the Rothschilds of Château Lafite, this wine is often overlooked. Yet it usually comes through with impressive results, its style replicating its more renowned big brother with outstanding purity and finesse.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
