  • Goedhuis, May 2009, Score: 91-93

A rich and lifted wine that offers impeccable balance amongst its impressively endowed palate of fruit, velvety tannins and notable freshness. Finishes on notes of lightly toasted spice and roasted coffee. One of the best we tasted from the Moueix stable. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

  • Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 89+

This potentially outstanding, dark ruby/plum-tinged 2008 reveals notes of caramel, cedarwood, herbs, earth, foresty and red as well as black fruits, excellent to outstanding density and medium body. The tannins remain elevated so this offering will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age. It should last for 15+ years. Drink: 2011 - 2026

  • Robert Parker, April 2009, Score: 91-93

A classic Certan de May, the 2008 reveals notes of cedarwood, roasted herbs, graphite, underbrush, and copious amounts of creme de cassis and sweet black cherries. Muscular and full-bodied with sensationally ripe tannins as well as purity, this large-scaled, backward, unevolved effort should turn out to be a long-lived wine. It is among the top half dozen or so efforts from this property in the last twenty years.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2009, Score: 89-92

Almost exotic on the nose, with apricot, orange and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Firm and well-made.

Château Certan de May

Château Certan de May bears the name of a great Scottish family which lived in France from the Middle Ages and in Pomerol from the end of the 16th century. According to local archives, the estate was the first to be authorised by the King to grow vines in Pomerol. At the time of the French Revolution, the estate was then broken up, before finally being taken over by the Barreau-Badar family in 1925. Today, Odette Barreau-Badar runs Certan de May, with the support of her son, Jean-Luc. Château Certan de May is located in the south-eastern part of the famous Pomerol plateau, bordering Vieux-Châteaux Certan and Petrus. The 5 hectares of ancient vines are planted on this exceptional clay-silica terroir. Vine plantings are 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is extremely charming, powerful, fleshy, robust and supple, all at the same time. Ageing is in 40% new oak for up to 16 months. It has a "monumental" structure and is very elegant and rich in aromas.Read less

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
