  • Goedhuis, April 2010, Score: 82-92

This is the second year in a row that we have offered Ch Bonlague. We admired its value for money last year, and we have once again fallen under its spell. A lovely 2009 that offers an ample palate of velvety cherry fruit, chocolate richness and bramble freshness. Finishes toasty and smooth.

  • Robert Parker, February 2012, Score: 89

Another sleeper of the vintage from this very consistent estate that always seems to over-achieve no matter what the vintage conditions, big, ripe black cherry and mocha notes intermixed with some forest floor and underbrush jump from the glass of this seductive, dense, full-bodied, fleshy fruit bomb from Pomerol. It is rich, pure, and just irresistible. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Drink: 2012 - 2020

  • Robert Parker, April 2010, Score: 89-91

This is another sleeper of the vintage from this terrific Pomerol that always offers tremendous pleasure, a succulent texture, and in 2009, more fruit, body, and glycerin than normal. Silky smooth and attention getting, it is loaded with mocha, black cherry, and a caramelized confiture fruit style. Luscious, heady, and hedonistic with class as well as personality, this beautiful Pomerol should drink well for 10-12 years. (Tasted two times.) Drink: 2010 - 2022

Producer

Château Bonalgue

A little known domaine, it is nonetheless an excellent address for juicy yet complex Pomerol at a very attractive price. Château Bonalgue's 6.5 hectares of Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Franc (10%) produce only 2500 per annum. Vive le Right Bank!

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
