  • Goedhuis, April 2011, Score: 91-94

Lafon Rochet has made incredible progress over the past 5-6 years, and they feel that their 2010 is the best wine they have ever made. Aromatic with notes of violets, chocolate and cherries, this offers wonderful balance between power and refinement. It expands brilliantly on the palate finishing long and fine. RK

  • Neal Martin, June 2021, Score: 93

The 2010 Lafon-Rochet is noticeably deep in color. It has a vivacious and sophisticated bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, wild hedgerow and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with powerful black fruit mixed with black pepper, clove and sage, developing more depth and grip towards the finish with superb persistence and structure. Impressive. Tasted at the Lafon-Rochet vertical at the property.

  • Neal Martin, February 2020, Score: 93

The 2010 Lafon-Rochet offers ample black and red fruit on the nose, undergrowth and figgy notes developing with aeration, quite open and more expressive than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, good structure, just a touch of piquancy with a very faint metallic note on the finish that will dissipate with time. This is one of the greatest Lafon-Rochet releases in recent years 2021-2040

  • Neal Martin, April 2011, Score: 92-94

Tasted twice at the UGC and the Château, the Lafon-Rochet has a very lifted, pure bouquet with tarry blackberry, cassis and dark plum, all very well defined although needing time to coalesce. The palate has a tarry, graphite tinged entry, firm, slightly coarse tannins but very good definition on the fresh finish. Again, just a little disjointed at the moment, but the foundations are here for a great wine.

  • Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 90+

I had some bottle variation with this blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The 2010 from Lafon Rochet seemed slightly restrained and closed down on the three occasions I tasted it in Bordeaux. Dense black/ruby, it displays sweet tannin, excellent purity, fresh fruit and a very primary, almost grapy style with lots of fruit, but at the same time, a somewhat monolithic character. It should turn out fine, but it certainly needs a good 7-8 years of cellaring and should drink well for up to two decades. The property is owned by the Tesseron family and run by the newest generation, son Basile, who is converting the estate to biodynamic farming a la his uncle, Alfred Tesseron at Pontet Canet.Drink: 2020-2040

  • Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 92-94

Proprietor Basile Tesseron may have produced his finest Lafon Rochet to date. The 2010's inky/blue/purple color is followed by a distinctive bouquet of spring flowers, blueberry pie, blackberry liqueur and crushed rocks. Although a classified growth, this wine is an undeniable sleeper of the vintage as its price remains reasonable. The wine possesses terrific structure, ripe tannins and a voluminous, broad, deep impression on the palate. The fruit intensity, purity and richness suggest 4-5 years of cellaring will be required and the wine will last for 20+ years. Drink: 2015 - 2035

  • Decanter, April 2011, Score: 17.5

Superbly ripe Cabernet fruit and lush yet firm flavours and perfect tannins make this an explosively good wine for the medium and long term. Drink 2017-30.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2011, Score: 16.5

Just a little sweet and made up. Lots of flattering pleasure at first but rather awkward astringency on the finish. Drink 2018-2030

  • Wine Spectator, April 2011, Score: 90-93

This has a nice winey core of dark plum and macerated black cherry fruit, followed by racy acidity and flashes of violet and graphite. Sneakily long. -J.M.

  • LPB, March 2020, Score: 94

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Lafon-Rochet comes bounding out of the glass with sit-up-and-beg notes of crème de cassis, blackberry pie and blueberry preserves followed by suggestions of Chinese five spice, potpourri and tilled soil. Full-bodied and concentrated, with loads of black and blue fruit layers, it has a rock-solid backbone of grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long and fragrant. 2020-2046

Ch Lafon Rochet is ideally situated due northwest of Lafite and west of Cos d'Estournel. Though its terroir is exceptional, many critics believed that earlier vintages in the 1970s and 1980s were too tannic and lacked charm. Since the 1990s, it has steadily improved due to several factors such as harvesting later, increasing the amount of new oak and using a higher percentage of Merlot in the blend - a trend which has a strong following in St Estèphe at the moment. From 1960-2021, the property was managed by three generations of the Tesseron family, and is now under the ownership of the Lorenzetti family, bringing into the Vignobles Cruzes-Lorenzetti portfolio alongside Ch d'Issan and Lilian Ladouys. In 2025, Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen has taken over after managing at Pédesclaux, swapping roles with incumbant Managing Director Christophe Congé, who is heading back to Pauillac to manage Pédesclaux.Read less

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
