  • Goedhuis, April 2015, Score: 89-91

Sweet dark whole berry aromas, this has strikingly direct blackcurrant and cassis fruit flavours, with hints of cinnamon and spice. Good bright acidity supported by a natural texture and depth.

  • Neal Martin, April 2015, Score: 89-91

The Château Duhart-Milon 2014 is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot that was picked from 29 until 10 October and 23 until 29 September respectively. It has a more fruit-driven nose than usual, a little less tertiary and austere than the Duhart's of old perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite sappy black fruit and well judged acidity. Nicely focused as usual here with a touch of salinity coming through on the finish. I feel that it is just missing the sense of dimension and authority that a great Duhart can possess, but it retains the aloofness that I admire so much. I will remain cautious for the time being and see how it fills out during its élevage.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2015, Score: 88-91

The 2014 Duhart-Milon is a bit bombastic in this vintage. Scents of leather, smoke and tar meld into a core of intense dark fruit. Powerful and voluptuous on the palate, the 2014 shows the influence of a higher than normal percentage of Merlot in the blend. Firm yet well-integrated tannin carry the finish. The 2014 comes in at 12.8% alcohol, but feels richer and weightier than that. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot.

  • James Suckling, March 2015, Score: 92-93

This is very solid and muscular with dark berries and blueberries. More merlot than normal but shows a serious structure that underlines the excellence of the cabernet. Small production of cabernet here with 45% merlot in the blend.

  • Decanter, April 2015, Score: 91

Striking nose of black fruits, riper than usual with 45% Merlot, but structure is there. A firm yet elegant Pauillac that has come to the fore with great clarity and depth. Drink: 2020-2035

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2015, Score: 17++

(55 Cabernet Sauvignon, 45 Merlot) Slimmer and with grainier tannins than expected this is a darker wine than many with fine balance in spite of its leaner dimensions. There are faint touches of mint on the nose, and there is a red fruit memory surrounding the darker core. Good, but a touch extracted and sour. Needs time.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2015, Score: 17

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot. Mid crimson. Lightly floral nose. Then some real substance and palate weight. Masses of tannins well managed to make a pretty competent medium-weight claret. Nothing showy but well done. Very much in Lafite style. Bone-dry finish with some persistence. Drink 2023-2035

  • Wine Spectator, April 2015, Score: 90-93

This has yet to soak up its oak and remains a bit raw, but the juniper and alder notes should meld easily enough as the core of plum and raspberry coulis flavors is ripe and fleshy. Shows ample grip through the finish, with a prominent tobacco streak adding texture.

Producer

Château Duhart-Milon

Owned since 1962 by the Rothschilds of Château Lafite, this wine is often overlooked. Yet it usually comes through with impressive results, its style replicating its more renowned big brother with outstanding purity and finesse.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
