  • Goedhuis, March 2022

Much more savoury than the 2017. The nose has a smoky flint and green-wood-spice notes, it seems a touch saline almost. With meat and mint hints behind and coolly wild strawberry notes underlying it all. The palate starts very lean, but is nicely evolving. It’s in an awkward place at the moment between maturing fruit stages, but ripe without the sweetness. Fresh crunchy acidity, with grippy integrated ripe tannins. This is very good but in that “teen phase” means it still needs time. Finishes minty

  • Goedhuis, December 2015

This 100% whole bunch Grand Cru is a jewel in the Morey St Denis crown. It has a wonderfully sophisticated wild strawberry scent, with hints of fresh spice. In the mouth there are appealingly fine-grained tannins, with good Pinot sweetness and a long layered finish, showing all the hallmarks of this great terroir.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 93-95

The 2014 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and is 100% whole bunch fruit. It is blessed with a winsome bouquet. As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy. Drink 2017-2040

  • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 94

A notably spicy, fresh, cool and floral nose displays mostly red berry fruit scents that are trimmed in discreet earth notes. There is excellent cut and definition to the nicely rich and attractively textured flavors that culminate in a presently austere finale though I doubt that austerity will persist. This is a relatively fine and forward vintage for Clos des Lambrays and one that should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age. In a word, marvelous. Drink 2026+

  • Jasper Morris MW, September 2017, Score: 95

Good bright red with a healthy, concentrated red fruit nose overlaid by a lick of oak. This is pleasingly concentrated on the palate, deep red fruit rather than black, plenty of oak but judiciously integrated. Balanced and stylish with medium density – what this vintage is all about

  • Sarah Marsh, December 2015, Score: 19

Rich and compact on the nose. Spices…ah wonderful somewhat exotic spices. The palate is rounded and juicy and supple - but so subtle. It is refined. Silky textured, it glides with some finesses. Not explosive wine; gentle and very long. “I am very happy with the style we are now making with the Clos. It is both refined and expressive….” says Thierry. Drink from 2020

Producer

Domaine des Lambrays

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.

Region

Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the commune of Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits. The 8.8 hectares of land, largely owned by the Saier family, were elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1979 as the vineyards clearly had huge potential. Nestled between Gevrey Chambertin to the north and Chambolle Musigny to the south the best Clos des Lambrays wines combine the feminine delicacy of Chambolle with the power and structure of Gevrey.
