  • Goedhuis, November 2015

Lemon yellow colour. Very giving aromas, with hints of hazelnuts and fresh cream. In the palate it balances a naturally textured weight, so typical of wines from this famous hillside, with broad ripe fruit flavours, supported by a lovely freshness and citrus clementine finish. This is a wine with stunning intensity, concentration and masses of class. It really shows how, in the best years, Corton Charlemagne produces exceptional Grand Cru wines.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 91-93

The 2014 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, which was still on the less when I tasted it at the domaine, has a crisp, fresh oyster shell-tinged bouquet that opens nicely with aeration. It is just a little austere, not that is detracts from its pleasure. The palate is fresh on the entry with a crisp line of acidity; perhaps a little more austere than other vintages, but that allows the terroir to show through. There is a lovely touch of lemongrass on the finish that prolongs length, completing a fine, quite saline, intriguing contribution to the vintage. Drink 2017-2032

  • Burghound, June 2016, Score: 93-95

A highly restrained nose features notes of cool and ultra-pure citrus, green apple, white flowers, herbal tea and wet stone. There is a distinctly racy mouth feel to the super intense and well-delineated medium weight plus flavors that are strikingly focused on the chiseled, clean, dry and moderately austere finale that delivers stunningly good complexity. I very much like this understated effort as it is an exercise in harmony and refinement and while there is the usual taut muscularity of a classic Corton-Charlemagne, it certainly doesn’t lack for elegance either. As legend goes, Charlemagne, king of the Franks, ordered Chardonnay planted in the vineyard of Corton during his reign in the 8th century so as he would not stain his light-coloured beard during moments of great thirst. Whether this is mere romantic fallacy, what cannot be denied is the exceptional quality of this appellation, particularly the wines from Bonneau du Martray. Domaine Bonneau du Martray planted its noble roots shortly after the French Revolution when vineyard land was swooped up from the church and resold to often wealthy bourgeoisies. Over the years, bits and pieces were chiselled off due to family divisions to what remains of the estate today - 11 hectares. Despite its losses, it remains the largest vineyard holder in Le Corton climat (9.5 ha) and is the only domaine besides Domaine de la Romanée Conti that produces exclusively grands crus. Since 1994, the domaine has been managed by Comte Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, the great nephew to René Bonneau du Martray. Though the family owns a small amount of Corton (which is treated as the spoiled baby of the family), their Corton Charlemagne is the wine for which they are celebrated. Regal and powerful, it is a wine which conquers the palate and is without a doubt, one of the finest white Burgundies produced in the Côte d'Or.Read less
