  • Goedhuis, December 2015

From 5 separate vineyard locations within the appellation of Gevrey Chambertin, this is a very complete village wine. Brilliant purple in colour, with strong wild blackberry aromas and hints of dark chocolate and freshly ground coffee. Great intensity, appealing richness and rounded tannins. A very rewarding style.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 91-93

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs is a blend of all Arnaud's Gevrey-Chambertin holdings. His late father Denis bottled them separately until 2004 and 2005 when he elected to blend them together -- with Arnaud following in his path, correctly in my humble opinion. Matured in 30% to 35% new oak, it has a brisk, stony red berry bouquet with attractive undergrowth scents percolating through. Very natural. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp structure, almost chalky tannin, very fine acidity, and a little compact towards the finish but it maintains precision from start to finish. This is an excellent Gevrey that comes highly recommended. Drink 2018-2032

  • Burghound, January 2016, Score: 89-91

A brooding but notably fresh nose combines notes of various dark berries, humus, earth and distinct sauvage aromas. There is better concentration, weight and volume to the medium-bodied flavors that deliver plenty of punch and minerality on the admirably complex, balanced and lingering finish. This is a quality Gevrey villages. top value 89-91. Drink 2021+

  • Sarah Marsh, December 2015, Score: 16.7

The young vines are now 40 years old. He likes to put all the vines together. He re-introduced this in 2013. 30% new oak in this wine. Twenty parcels altogether…En Songe is several parcels. 30,000 bottles. In 2014 blended just before bottling, but in 2015 he blended before barreling. Deep, dark red cherry aroma…some lifted floral pretty notes too. The palate is structured, fine firm tannins; sweet fruit, good freshness. Actually a straight and pure and structured Gevrey. The finish is direct and long for village. A sophisticated Gervey.

For many years, Dénis Mortet worked passionately to create one of the most sought after domaines in Burgundy. He learned about winemaking while working with his father Charles, a cousin of Charles Rousseau. From the early 1990s he built his vineyard area to almost 10 hectares dispersed throughout Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. His exceptional determination and self-criticism drove him in pursuit of the holy grail of Gevrey Chambertin. Year-in and year-out, he aimed for higher and higher ideals believing that there was always better, always purer. Sadly, he has not lived to see his results. After his tragic death in 2006 at the age of just 51, his son, Arnaud, took over vineyard management and winemaking. Since then, this domaine has been soaring to ever-greater heights. In Dénis’s era the wines had been admired for their opulence, but in the past decade Arnaud has redefined the Mortet style as one that ascends towards a pinnacle of finesse and elegance. The dextrous handling of each parcel means the Fixin and Marsannay are as interesting talking points as the Lavaux St Jacques and Clos de Vougeot. The domaine has forged a reputation for organic viticulture par excellence, and the dedicated work in the vineyards is abundantly clear in the cellar. Arnaud has an astonishing gift for managing whole bunch fruit and matching new oak to his pure, crystalline wines.Read less

Region

Bourgogne

This blanket regional appellation can apply to wines throughout Burgundy (60% of the area's production) as long as they comply with regulations relating to grape type, yield and alcohol content. Reds and roses are from Pinot Noir or Gamay. Whites are Chardonnay. They are usually the most straightforward of the Burgundy wines, and as a result are the least expensive and the most approachable upon release. In the hands of a more serious producer these can represent exceptional value and quality. The wines are made with the same care and attention to detail as their grander wines. However, they may not qualify for a village or communal appellation because the vines are too young or the vineyard area is outside the appellation boundary.
