  • Antonio Galloni, November 2019, Score: 93

The 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is the most complete of the Barolos in this range. Suave and polished (for a young Barolo), the 2015 offers a good bit of early appeal, as all these wines do. Sweet tobacco, dried cherry, mint, crushed flowers and orange zest add layers of nuance to this pretty, expressive Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria. 2022 - 2040

  • Wine Advocate, June 2019, Score: 96+

Monvigliero in the Verduno township is quickly becoming one of the most celebrated and talked about crus in Barolo. The Fratelli Alessandria estate was among the first to understand its potential, and indeed, this wine was first released in 1978. Fast forward to today and you will find that the 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is an absolutely classic interpretation that stays faithful to past incarnations. The wine offers pretty berry aromas intermingled with spice, licorice and crushed stone. A floral aroma of red rose also appears. The tannins are solid and will require extra years of bottle aging. • James Suckling, January 2019, Score: 94

Attractive dried-rose and potpourri aromas with sweet, dried strawberry notes. This is really charming. The palate has a very bright red-fruit spark on entry that builds into a chalky bend of tannin that holds the finish long and fresh. Elegant and approachable now, this is a great expression of Verduno that will age very well. Best from 2022.

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2019, Score: 17.5

Verduno. Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Sweet and rich cherry-compote nose with savoury spicy notes hovering over it. Pretty combination of juicy acidity, ripe fruit and polished tannins. Very long and with great focus. (WS)

  • Jancis Robinson, March 2019, Score: 17

Pale-medium garnet. Primary, blackberry fruit intensity with nutty oak breadth and some spice tones. High, fine tannins in a classic Barolo style. Rich, blackberry and black-cherry palate fruit, with chocolate oak notes. Just a touch of warmth and in need of a bit more freshness, but pretty good stuff. (TJ)

In the small medieval village of Verduno lies the historic Fratelli Alessandria cellar. The family has tended vines in the region since the beginning of the 19th century and today their 12 hectares stretch over some of the best crus in Verduno and also Monforte. This is a true family affair, Gian Battista Alessandria and his wife Flavia tend to the vines while his brother Alessandro and his son Vittore are in the winery. Together, they craft high-quality artisanal wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety but also from some Dolcetto, Barbera and the little-known Pelaverga variety. The Barolos from the village of Verduno are highly distinct and can be lighter, lacier and more elegant than those from other villages.Read less

Region

Barolo

With Brunello in Tuscany, Barolo is undoubtedly Italy's finest wine producing region. Located in Piedmont in the north west of Iataly Barolo is comprised of 5 major communes - Barolo, Monteforte d'Alba, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba - though the latter three tend to represent the main styles of the region. The wines are compelling and polished - an exemplary expression of the Nebbiolo grape. DOCG law requires a minimum ageing of 2 years in cask or barrel yet can be longer depending on the producer. Barolos are generally released four or more years after the vintage.
