  • Neal Martin, August Southwold Blind tasting 2020, Score: 94

The 2016 Haut-Batailley was tasted from two bottles, the first showing a touch of TCA. The second has an airy and well-defined bouquet of blackberry, graphite and subtle floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and very classic in style, displaying impressive grip. I appreciate the substance toward the finish, and the pencil lead lingering on the aftertaste. This is an outstanding Haut-Batailley. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. 2022 - 2042

The 2016 Haut Batailley can be seen as a transitional wine. The property was sold to the Cazes family at the end of March 2017, so the Borie family made the wines and the Cazes family essentially finished the barrel maturation. As a consequence, the label will probably not be the new design that will adorn vintages henceforth. This has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, bilberry and subtle floral notes (pressed iris petals and a touch of violet). The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly chalky tannins. What I love about this Haut-Batailley, caught in limbo, is that it responds with so much freshness, vitality and tension, especially on the finish. Excellent. 2022 - 2042

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2017, Score: NR

The Cazes family, owners of Lynch-Bages, announced their acquisition of Haut Batailley during the en primeur tastings. Because the Cazes did not make the 2016, they opted not to show the wine en primeur. Jean-Charles Cazes told me that it will be offered in bottle at a later date.

  • LPB, November 2018, Score: 92+

The 2016 Haut Batailley has a deep garnet-purple color and aromas of baked redcurrants, red plums and cassis with asphalt, fried herbs and earth. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and chewy with an earthy finish. 2019 - 2033

Producer

Château Haut-Batailley

Château Haut-Batailley was bought by Jean-Charles Cazes of Ch Lynch Bages in 2017 from François-Xavier Borie. It has one of the highest vine densities in Bordeaux at 10,000 vines per hectare, and holds a superb location, neighbouring Chx Lynch Bages, Latour and Pichon Lalande.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
