    The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru leans more toward red fruit than black fruit, just a little damp earth, wet leaf component that detracts from the purity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannin, actually more like a Clos Saint-Denis, with touches of black olive on the masculine, maybe charmless finish? Let’s see how this matures in bottle. It may have just not performed on the day of my visit. 91-93/100.

    A restrained and almost mute nose only grudgingly displays its blend of various red berries, herbal tea, spice and pretty floral and sandalwood wisps. There is terrific intensity to the sleek and beautifully delineated flavors that possess evident power if perhaps not the density I'm otherwise used to seeing on the stony, deep and long finish. The supporting tannins are both ripe and firm and this relatively elegant beauty is going to require moderately extended cellaring.

Jacques spent several years learning winemaking from the late, great Gerard Potel at Domaine de la Pousse d’Or and he has been a great proponent of including the stems in fermentation. The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
