“The Franchino 2016 Gattinara Riserva isn’t the most polished or the sweetest fruit-endowed version I have ever had from this winery, but I loved its austere, classic elegance.”

Region

Gattinara

Located in the region of Piedmont, north-west Italy, Gattinara was awarded DOCG status in 1990. Since then the region has clawed back its reputation that it once had in the 19th Century as a region for intense red wines that can rival some of the most serious of Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Spanna is the local grape variety used, which is the local name for Nebbiolo, to which Bonarda and Vespolina may be added in less ripe vintages to add softness to the sometimes austere Spanna. Gattinara is capable of producing some of the most long-lived wines of Italy and is considered the noblest form of Spanna.
