  • Goedhuis, April 2018

This cuvée was previously known as ‘La Petite Chapelle’, but is now named after the small stone hut that provides shelter for those working in the steep vines. The fruit comes from the eastern side of the Hermitage hill where the soil is a little richer. It has a deep garnet colour, and wonderfully rich aromas. It possesses the beautiful generosity of Hermitage fruit with an elegant freshness on the finish. It has a rounded tannic depth and leaves a lingering memory of sweet dark fruits, roasted coffee beans, and violet notes.

  • Wine Advocate, December 2017, Score: 91-93

The 2016 Hermitage La Maison Bleue comes from the alluvial soils toward the eastern side of the appellation. A representative blend showed a bit of toasty character but also plenty of supple dark fruit and a rich, velvety texture. It should be ready to drink shortly after release and drink well for a decade or more after that.

  • Josh Raynolds, June 2018, Score: 94-96

Saturated bright-rimmed ruby. Seductive, mineral-tinged aromas of red and blue preserves, cola, violet pastille and olive paste, along with a spicy topnote. Black raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors display excellent energy and depth, a subtle spicecake accent and zesty back-end cut. Deftly plays richness off vivacity and shows no excess fat. Finishes with persistent cherry and floral notes, supple tannins and strong, spicy persistence.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2018, Score: 18.5+

This is the name for the old Petit Chapelle cuvée (the first vintage was 2015). It appears very dry and very pure and this astringency demonstrates the epic skin tannins here. The nose is meaty with less obvious pepper and more spice and game notes. With a completely different feel to the rest of the portfolio, this is a powerful wine with grunt and muscle and it is certainly behaving like a bodyguard to La Chapelle. What it lacks in beauty it makes up for in concentration and bravado. Drink 2024 - 2035

One of the most recognised producers in the Rhône Valley, Jaboulet was first created in the early 1800s. Up until a couple of years ago, it remained family owned. Over time, it established its flagship Hermitage La Chapelle as one of the top wines of the region ranking it along Chave Hermitage and Guigal single-vineyard Côte-Rôties in quality. In the mid-late 1990s, quality became irregular due to the death of Gérard Jaboulet and other internal issues. In early 2006, the Jaboulet family sold their heralded domaine to the Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and major investors in Billecart-Salmon in Champagne. Since this change of hands, investment has been foremost - contributing to new winemaking facilities as well as creating a dramatic and imposing aging cellar sculpted out of an ancient quarry, a space that might put a superhero's headquarters to shame. Their goal is to put Jaboulet's range of wines back on the collector's map. Since their takeover, the results have been noticed. Even Robert Parker has stated, "I fully expect quality will dramatically soar at Jaboulet (just as it has at Château La Lagune in Bordeaux).." (The Wine Advocate, April 2007).Read less

Region

Hermitage

Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
