  • Goedhuis, November 2017

The cooler of Cathiard’s two Nuits premiers crus, the 2016 is vibrant and fresh, with extremely pretty aromas combined with some dense red fruit concentration on the palate. Sébastien has reduced the amount of new oak from previous years, and 55% here helps support the fruit without masking it.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 91-93

Around 25% of the production was lost because of frost with respect to Cathiard’s 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey. It has an extremely floral bouquet loaded with crushed violets, so Vosne-Romanée like in style. Very ostentatious! The palate is medium-bodied with black cherries and blueberry fruit, strict tannin underneath that segue into with a sustained, peppery and quite penetrating finish. Maybe the showiest of Sebastien's wines from barrel, but you know that this is going to give so much joy once in bottle. Drink 2021-2035

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 90-92

A subtly spiced array speaks of ultra-fresh aromas of dark currant, violet, plum and soft earth wisps. The mid-palate of the middle weight flavors is deceptively pliant because as the lingering and lightly stony and rustic finish sits on the palate the supporting tannins become more evident. I very much like the depth and persistence though note that this will require a few years of aging. Drink: 2024+

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 93

The Nuits Aux Thorey is one of the Domaine’s emblematic wines, and the 2016 is lovely and already very well integrated. Aromas of creamy cherry, cassis, rich soil, truffle and spice precede a full-bodied, fine-grained wine, its firm Nuits tannins beautifully cloaked in juicy fruit and only asserting themselves on the long, racy finish. Drink 2026-2046

He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
