  • Goedhuis, November 2017

An exuberant wine from this excellent premier cru, positioned alongside Pommard. A very layered and deep wine, full of wild hedgerow fruits, with hints of truffle. Tightly structured and very long.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 90-92

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, quite floral with hints of crushed violet and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel. This is not a deep Fremiets, but there are fine-boned tannins and it is potentially a pretty and feminine Volnay with a touch of piquancy on the finish. Lovely. Drink 2020-2035

  • Burghound, April 2018, Score: 90-93

A background note of menthol sits atop the spicy combination of floral and the pure essence of dark pinot fruit. The highly energetic and equally pure middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the beautifully refined, saline and even firmer finish that also exhibits a trace of youthful austerity. This well-balanced effort is really quite lovely and very Frémiets in character. Outstanding. Drink 2026+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2017, Score: 91-93

Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer.

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 91

Like the premier cru blend, Fremiets is quite fragrant and expressive this year, offering up notes of plum, raspberry, raw cocoa and a touch of violets. The wine is deeper, more concentrated and taut on the palate, with a firm chassis of tannin which is likely to become more integrated after racking and further élevage. Drink 2024-2040

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
