    The 2017 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru comes from a parcel located on its highest contours. It has the most accomplished aromatics of the domaine’s Grand Crus, featuring shimmering cranberry and raspberry scents, sous-bois and tea leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and more substance than either the Les Maréchaudes or the Bressandes. The seductive, smooth finish bulges with red fruit. Superb. 2021 - 2038

    The brooding and all-but mute nose is comprised by softly spicy and once again markedly floral-scented aromas of red berries and newly turned earth, all of which is trimmed in a touch of wood. The sleek, intense and large-scaled flavors brim with minerality that carries over to the muscular and explosively lengthy finish. This is impressive and should make for a potential great Clos du Roi. Drink: 2032+

    Yet again there is just the barest hint of barnyard character sitting atop the overtly spicy and markedly floral-scented nose of red berries and newly turned earth, all of which is trimmed in a touch of wood. The sleek, intense and large-scaled flavors brim with minerality that carries over to the muscular finish. This is impressive and assuming that the barnyard character does not become more pronounced with age, it should prove to be a fine Clos du Roi. Drink 2029+

    Aromas of rose hip and rose petals, blood orange, sweet dark fruits and raw cocoa introduce the 2017 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, a full-bodied, satiny wine that's beautifully fragrant and complete, with elegantly fine-grained structuring tannins and a pure, mineral-driven finish. As usual, it's higher-toned and less gourmand than the fleshy Bressandes, but it's the deeper and more serious wine, if only marginally.

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
