  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 86-88

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon has a lifted black cherry and cassis scented bouquet that is nicely poised, though not powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry, light tannin, a little bitter towards the finish with moderate length. I would just like to see more flesh evolve by the time of bottling. 2020 - 2030

A pretty, fresh and airy nose is composed primarily of red currant along with background nuances of spice and earth. There is both excellent drive and delineation to the succulent middle weight flavors that conclude in a lingering finish where a hint of bitter cherry pit emerges. This isn't especially complex but it is highly refreshing and a wine that will be hard to resist young. Drink 2022+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 88-90

Fourrier's 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon wafts from the glass with aromas of plums, dark chocolate and candied peel, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent palate that's open-knit and giving but nicely concentrated. It will offer a broad drinking window.

Producer

Domaine Fourrier

Jean-Marie Fourrier took over his family domaine in 1994 and has attacked every vintage with dynamic determination and ambition, building the reputation of the estate with astute viticulture and fanatical winemaking. He had learned from the best, most notably the late Henri Jayer of Vosne Romanée and Domaine Drouhin in the Willamette Valley in Oregon with whom he did his formative training. He is a keen participant in the growing trend towards minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery. The domaine has a remarkable array of very old vines, many having been planted between the wars. The Fourrier wines are pure and balanced.

Region

Morey Saint Denis

Morey St. Dénis often suffers from an identity crisis. They are more fruit forward than the wines of Gevrey Chambertin, yet more structured than those of Chambolle Musigny. It seems in this sensethat they are like middle children, always wanting to please yet not standing out as the noisy one or the notably quiet one. They are however crowd pleasers and for those who feel that Gevreys are too muscular and Chambolles too feminine; Moreys seem just right, offering velvety tannins and tangible fruit. The village offers five grand cru vineyards including Clos de la Roche, Clos St. Dénis and Clos des Lambrays which nonetheless can rival those of neighbouring villages in terms of quality (some even view them as the best in the Côte de Nuits) and various premier cru vineyards.
