  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Like many of the Grivot Nuits, this has strong echoes of Vosne about it. Indeed, it is one of the prettiest wines in the cellar this year. Its silky red fruit and supple creamy texture give it captivating appeal, and it is easy to imagine this will drink well from early on. Its poised, taut structure will keep it going for the long term, too.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 92

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Roncière 1er Cru has a slightly stemmy, well-defined bouquet featuring brambly red fruit and balsamic, though it needs a little more cohesion. Charming, though. The lithe palate is well balanced with supple tannins and pure strawberry, cranberry and white pepper notes toward the finish. Nice sustain; gentle and quite alluring. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2022 - 2040

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 91-93

The 2017 Nuit Saint-Georges Roncière 1er Cru (Grivot uses the singular and not the plural Roncières) is pure and charming on the nose of raspberry preserve, briar, brown spices and a touch of pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, tightening up toward the second half and leading to a saline, quite penetrating finish. Good potential here, but afford it four or five years in bottle. 2021 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 90-93

Moderately generous oak and menthol influence is present on the attractively fresh nose of dark raspberry, sauvage and earth scents. There is good muscle and excellent punch to the lightly mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that possess focused power on the tightly wound and overtly saline finish where the wood influence reflected by the nose reappears. This well-made effort is also sufficiently structured to require patience. Drink 2029+

  • Decanter, December 2018, Score: 93

Back to a normal crop in 2017 after a 50% hit in 2016, this is made in a Vosne-like style by the Grivots, even though the grapes come from the southern side of Nuits-St-Georges. Poised, supple and almost good to drink from the barrel, it has juicy, lip-smacking fruit, stylish 30% new wood and balancing acidity. Drinking Window 2022 - 2027

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
