  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Like the Suchots, this small parcel of grand cru was bought in the early 1990s. Around 50% whole bunch fruit gives the wine a salty, fine tension. It has excellent persistence and satisfying mid-palate weight of grand cru calibre. The wine was aged in 15 hectolitre foudres, of which 20% are new, and this larger format gives the wine a supple and rounded texture whilst diminishing none of its power.

  • Neal Martin, November 2021, Score: 95

The 2017 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a very open and expressive bouquet, with background scents of tobacco infusing the black fruit. There is fine mineralité, very focused with marine scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, impressive substance and tension, a little new oak to be subsumed with a light spiced, quite sapid finish. Convincing length. Excellent. Tasted at the Domaine de L’Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London. 95 points. Drink 2025 - 2060. Neal Martin, Vinous

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 97

The 2017 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has an exquisitely-defined, focused bouquet of brambly red fruit, crushed stone and wilted rose petal. The palate is refined but powerful, with gently grippy tannins. There is a Richebourg-like backbone but Romanée-Saint-Vivant-like elegance toward the impressively long finish. This is a magnificent 2017 Grand Cru. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2026 - 2060

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 94-96

The 2017 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is matured in a judicious 20% new oak, since it was fermented in a new wood tank. It has a rather opaque bouquet, much more backward than the Les Suchots, featuring dark berry fruit mixed with bergamot and a touch of bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with a spicy entry and more lively than the aromatics at the moment, the 40% whole bunches lending tension and sous-bois notes toward a finish that fans out with confidence. It will require three or four years in bottle but will be worth the wait. Four barrels produced. 2022 - 2048

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 90-93?

Relatively generous wood stops just short of fighting with the exuberantly spicy and ultra-fresh aromas of red raspberry, violet, Asian-style tea and a wisp of anise. There is excellent intensity to the voluminous and impressive concentrated flavors that culminate in a firm, youthfully austere and mouth coating finish that is also mildly drying. My predicted range assumes that this will ultimately harmonize but I must point out that the finish is pretty awkward at present. Drink 2032+

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)Read less

Region

Romanée Saint Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
