Taken from one of Serralunga’s most precious plots at 450m above sea level, the Badarina vineyard was traditionally reserved for Dolcetto vines, however, Grimaldi made the bold decision to plant Nebbiolo. Due to its cooler climate, the grapes are picked 10 days later than the Bricco Ambrogio, in order to achieve perfect ripeness. Without a doubt, this is Grimaldi’s greatest cru and encapsulates the family’s history as revolutionaries of the region. The 2018 Badarina is a compelling expression of the power and minerality that define Serralunga d’Alba. A beautiful limpid pomegranate colour. The sweet perfume of high-toned red fruits such as wild raspberry, pomegranate and cranberry sit atop fresh herbs and rose petal. There is a mouth-watering sapidity and chalkiness on the palate thanks to the limestone soils of this special vineyard as well as a pleasing bitterness, and a finely etched, cooling acidity. Linear, saline, and focused, this shows quivering tension and is classic Serralunga.

With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Bruna Grimaldi 2018 Barolo Badarina opens nicely and completely, relative to its young age, within a few hours of popping the cork. The character of the wine is hearty and firm, although there is also a silkiness or smoothness that is especially associated with this vintage. You get some of those vaguely metallic aromas of rusty nail or iron ore that come with the Serralunga d'Alba territory. There is also plenty of dark fruit, licorice and wild rose. Fruit from the special Vigna Regnola site is blended into this wine in 2018 because no Riserva was produced. This is a release of 6,000 bottles. Drink 2024-2038.

Region

Piedmont

Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
