  • Goedhuis, November 2019

A wine that really lives up to all the expectations of this famous Grand Cru. Full of wild black forest fruits, the initial impression is one of lusciousness and ostentation, and then the second attack arrives with complex wild, savoury flavours that give composure and harmony. This is so complex, and the sensations and flavours just keep evolving . Thankfully, the memory of these flavours goes on and on. Brilliant.

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 97

A brooding and almost grumpy nose only grudgingly gives up its aromas of poached plum, warm earth, smoked game and once again, plenty of spice nuances. The velvety and opulent big-bodied flavors brim with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a seductive mid-palate mouth but also serves to buffer the remarkably firm tannic spine shaping the powerful and hugely long finish where the only nit is a suggestion of warmth. This is a fantastic but seriously imposing wine with the structure to match so this is one to buy and forget you own it. In a word, brilliant. 2043+!

This too is quite firmly reduced and aromatically unreadable. This is an imposing wine with the structure to match so this is one to buy and forget you own it. Dont miss

  • Wine Advocate, June 2020, Score: 94-96

Ponsot's 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is a brooding, powerful wine, unfurling in the glass with a kaleidoscopic bouquet that marries deep fruit tones of dark berries and cassis with sweet nuances of smoked meats, licorice, dark chocolate and peonies. Full-bodied, broad-shouldered and muscular, it's deep and concentrated, with a layered core of fruit that's built around rich reserves of tannin and lively balancing acids. This appears to be the most structured Ponsot Clos de la Roche of the decade; it will demand patience, but it is a terrific wine in the making.

  • Decanter, June 2020, Score: 97

It's fascinating to taste the two components of this superb wine, grown only 50 metres apart, as well as the finished blend to see that the pair are much greater than the sum of their parts. Retaining acidity and focus in a hot year, this is a refined, violet-perfumed Pinot Noir that combines sensuous texture and fruit sweetness with acidity and underlying tannic structure. Domaine Ponsot is flourishing under the new régime.

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Region

Clos de la Roche

The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
