  • Goedhuis, May 2026

As with the prestige cuvée, the Vintage Cuvée is sourced exclusively from grand cru vineyards owned and farmed by Roederer, with all of the fruit for this 2018 drawn from the prestigious villages of Verzy and Chouilly. Quite remarkable given the price. What’s more, organic and biodynamic farming are standard here, with Roederer having played a leading role in championing these practices in Champagne, for which we salute them wholeheartedly. As for 2018, it is one of the standout recent vintages in Champagne and the first in a brilliant run of years for the region, followed by 2019 and 2020. A welcome relief after a very difficult stretch of vintages prior. This is a Champagne with real vintage character and grower-like quality: more open and expressive in youth than Cristal, offering immediate charm while still carrying the chalky tension and rich, sumptuous length that define Roederer’s house style. It’s charming. We love it.

  • Jancis Robinson, February 2026, Score: 17.5

The main component, 80% of the blend, is Pinot Noir from Verzy, supplemented by 20% Chardonnay from Chouilly. 28% of the base wine saw oak, 20% of it went through malo. The 2018 is described as ‘the end of an era’ because the Pinot Noir on north-facing vines in Verzy now achieves such phenolic ripeness that it is possible to make a wine entirely from these grapes. The 2019 vintage is a Blanc de Noirs, something Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon has wanted to do for many years. ‘La Montagne’ is cited on the back label, a reference to the fact that all the grapes came from their vineyards on the Montagne de Reims (as opposed to ‘La Côte’ for the Côte des Blancs vineyards and ‘La Rivière’ for their vineyards in the Vallée de la Marne). Dosage 7 g/l. Extremely intense nose with an explosion of life. Light smokiness and crème patissière. By no means bone dry, in fact the fruit is positively exuberant. Like a rich lemon mousse. I like it! (JR)

  • Jeb Dunnuck, February 2026, Score: 94

Coming from Verzy and Chouilly, the 2018 Champagne Vintage Brut has 80% Pinot Noir from Verzy and is the last vintage to include Chardonnay from Chouilly. Historically, the Chardonnay was included in the blend to soften the austerity of the Pinot Noir; however, with these recent vintages and warming conditions, this is no longer necessary, as the Pinot Noir is fully ripe and appealing on its own. In the glass, it offers aromas of pure red cherries, fresh flowers, bright spice, and wild raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it has compact definition, a pillowy mousse, a chalky texture, and mouthwatering tangerine notes on the finish. While I am eagerly anticipating the 2019 release, this holds a fantastic place in the range to enjoy now or over the next 15 or so years.

Established in 1776, Champagne Louis Roederer is one of the few remaining completely independent family owned, great Champagne houses. By 1886 the House had achieved such a reputation for quality that the second Louis Roederer was asked by Tsar Alexander II to create Cristal for the exclusive use of the Russian Tsars, and in so doing created the first Cuvée de Prestige. In January 2006, Frédéric Rouzaud became the 6th generation of the family at the head of the company. With 10 years already behind him at Louis Roederer, Frédéric's accession is valuable; as a guarantee of continuity for the House. Roederer owns just over 200 hectares of vineyards located in the finest areas of Champagne - Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs. Roederer self sufficient for 100% of its vintage styles, and provides two-thirds of its production for Brut Premier. Such a high proportion of ‘estate' grapes is very unusual in champagne, and ensures superior quality at allstages from grape to glass.Read less

Region

Champagne

Champagne, the world's greatest sparkling wine, needs little introduction - with imitations produced in virtually every country capable of growing grapes, including such unlikely candidates as India and China. The Champagne region, to the north of Paris, has the most northerly vineyards in France, with vines grown on slopes with a southerly exposure to maximise sunlight. The soil is chalky, providing an excellent balance of drainage and water retention. The key to the wine is in the cellar - the bubbles result from a second fermentation in the bottle and the rich toasty flavours in great Champagne come from extended bottle ageing on the yeasty lees. Until the eighteenth century, the wines produced in the Champagne area were light acidic white wines, with no hint of sparkle. However glass and closure technology developed at that time and it was not long before Dom Perignon, a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Hautvilliers, started experimenting with blends and produced the first recognisable champagne. In a world accustomed to still wines, the advent of champagne was almost a flop. It was saved when it became fashionable at the French court as a result of Louis XV's mistress Madame de Pompadour commenting "Champagne is the only wine that lets a woman remain beautiful after she has drunk it." And the rest is history, with famous (or infamous) champagne lovers including Casanova, Dumas, Wagner, Winston Churchill, James Bond and Coco Chanel.
