The 2018 Solaia continues to develop beautifully. Resonant and ample on the palate, with tons of vibrancy, the 2018 offers terrific vibrancy as well as character. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, blackberry jam, licorice and spice build as the Solaia gains momentum over time. The 2018 is dense and beautifully layered, yet retains the mid-weight structure of this super elegant vintage. Drink 2026-2043.

Very aromatic and lively on the nose with currants, fresh herbs, white pepper and cherry blossoms. Full-bodied with a vertical, multilayered structure and ultra fine tannins. Velvety texture. Extremely long and focused. Complex and succulent. This is the smallest production of Solaia ever. Great length. This is a beautifully complex red that’s open now, but needs another three to four years to show even more of its excellence.

  • Jane Anson, September 2021, Score: 98

Cracked almond and bitter chocolate and a ton of blackberry and raspberry puree. It’s gourmet with butterscotch and coffee beans, a wine that you want to share. Lifts off through the palate, has complexity and delicacy and waves of flavours that invade the mouth. Set in the Tuscany hills, 300m above sea level. A brilliant wine from the Antinori family. Stefano Carpaneto director.

The Marchesi Antinori 2018 Solaia reveals a silky and elegant personality, and the wine steps away from some of the more robust fruit weight and dark concentration that we've seen in the past. This elegant vintage prizes fruit purity and focus with black plum, cassis, blue flower, pencil shaving and lots of sweet spice from the oak that recalls clove and toasted almond. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The fruit is harvested at the Antinori family's Tenuta Tignanello at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. The percentage of Cabernet Franc used in the blend is the ultimate Solaia wild card. In this vintage, the Franc has been increased to 7%, and that number is expected to be even higher in 2019 as the vines get older and the fruit more complex. Production of Solaia is 65,000 bottles in this vintage. This is a beautiful wine, but if pressed I must admit a preference for the 2018 Tignanello (the other celebrated wine crafted at this property). The 2018 Solaia is delicious on all fronts as expected, but the 2018 Tignanello struck at my heart strings. Either way, these are stunning results. Drink 2023 - 2050

The Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385 - they are possibly the oldest wine producers in the world. Throughout its long history, spanning 26 generations, the family has always personally managed the business making innovative choices, but always with unwavering respect for tradition and the land. Expanding all the while, this family's interests span several estates allowing them to offer wines from the best regions of tuscany. Their influence helped efect many changes that affected the quality of the whole region's wines. For example, in response to 15 years of difficult evolution, in which Piero plays a leading role, the Italian government overrules the old DOC regulations and introduces the DOCG del Chianti Classico. This new regulation is due to the huge improvements in the quality of Chianti: not only the reduction in the requirement of white grapes, and the authorisation of 10% of non-native grape varieties, but also in the reduction of production yields and (even more importantly, according to the Antinoris' concept of quality) yields per vine.Read less

Region

Tuscany

Arguably the most celebrated of all Italian regions for its sun, delicious food and rich wines. Chianti lies at the heart of this centrally located, picturesque and expansive area. Tuscany is also home to Chianti's more powerful cousin, Brunello di Montalcino, illustrious Super Tuscanblends and spicy, exuberant whites.
