Goedhuis, March 2023
Taken from one of Serralunga’s most precious plots at 450m above sea level, the Badarina vineyard was traditionally reserved for Dolcetto vines, however, Grimaldi made the bold decision to plant Nebbiolo. Due to its cooler climate, the grapes are picked 10 days later than the Bricco Ambrogio, in order to achieve perfect ripeness. Without a doubt, this is Grimaldi’s greatest cru and encapsulates the family’s history as revolutionaries of the region. Gorgeous wild raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate grace the nose of this 2019 as well as plenty of floral, mineral and spice complexities. Superb freshness on the palate comes from a glistening acidity. Mouth-watering and saline with a pleasing chalky texture that hints at its limestone terroir. The finish is tinged with herbal, balsamic notes. If the Bricco Ambrogio is broad shouldered, the Badarina is vertical, with an energetic linear tension. Drink 2026-2039.

Kerin O’Keefe, February 2023, Score: 97
The Bruna Grimaldi 2019 Badarina is fragrant and compelling, opening with heady aromas recalling eucalyptus, rose, violet and exotic spice. Full-bodied and at the moment youthfully austere – a good thing for a young Barolo destined for long aging – the palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, cranberry, licorice and baking spice before a mineral finish. Firm but refined tannins provide seamless support while bright acidity keeps it well balanced. Drink 2027–2044.
Region
Piedmont
Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
