  • Goedhuis, February 2024

Laura explained to us that in 2019, they chose to use a particularly high percentage of Sangiovese fruit from their Olmo vineyard. The limestone rich galestro soils thrived in this brilliant vintage and this 2019 has a profoundly mineral core that leaves the palate tingling. Gleamingly fresh, yet intensely complex, waves of crystalline red and black berry fruit glide across the palate and mix with herbal, mineral, spice and smoke nuances. Supple yet chiselled, with an artfully restrained power, it is standout offering from one of Montalcino’s most exciting vintages.

  • Vinous, November 2023, Score: 95

Hauntingly dark yet inviting, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino smolders up with a beguiling blend of grilled herbs and ashen stone lifted by white smoke that finally gives way to dried black cherries and cola. Sexy and suave, it floods the palate with velvety textures and supple ripe fruits, expertly balanced by a core of brisk acidity and salty mineral tones. Fine-grained tannins, along with a pleasantly bitter tinge, appear through the finale as the 2019 finishes long and full of tension, leaving the slightest trace of orange. The balance of richness and racy character within makes this a total standout. Drink 2025-2034.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, November 2023, Score: 99

The gorgeous 2019 Brunello from Gianni Brunelli pulls you in, with its quintessential Brunello fragrance composed of underbrush, woodland berry, botanical herb and wild rose. Savory and all about finesse, the delicious palate shows elegant restraint and energy, delivering juicy red cherry, raspberry, cinnamon and crushed mint alongside polished tannins. Bright acidity keeps it beautifully balanced. Hats off to Laura Brunelli, this is an absolutely enthralling wine. Drink 2027–2039

  • Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, December 2023, Score: 97

This wine offers lifted fruit with popping cherry, blackcurrant and sour crab apple. This level of fruit brightness is not easy to maintain in a wine that ages for five years before its commercial release. The folks at Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto do a fine job. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino delivers balanced oak renderings with exotic spice and dried chili flake. The wine has a beautiful nose, but the palate definitely needs more time to flesh out and relax, considering the current tightness of the tannins. Drink 2025-2045.

Producer

Gianni Brunelli

Having enjoyed over 10 years of success as restaurateurs in Sienna, Gianni Brunelli returned home to Montalcino with his wife Laura. In 1987, following the death of his father, Gianni bought back the family’s old property – Le Chiuse di Sotto – a modest-sized farm northeast of Montalcino, split evenly between sangiovese vines and olive groves. Together, Gianni and Laura fast gained a reputation for producing some of the most impressive Brunellos of the region, expanding their estate with the purchase of nearby Podernovone in the mid-1990s. It is from this 4.5-hectare property that their exceptional Brunello and Rosso wines are made, as well as the merlot-based Amor Costante. The Brunellis have always been fervent exponents of organic viticulture, steering clear of the use of herbicides and chemicals, with the belief that a conscientious hands-on approach in the vineyard is key to producing high-quality wines; yields are deliberately kept low, and the grapes are hand-harvested in order to guarantee the quality of fruit. Sadly, Gianni passed away unexpectedly in 2008, however Laura continues to uphold her husband’s philosophy of winemaking, while bringing her own distinctive style to the wines. Due to their lightness and elegance, Laura’s wines are superb from an early age, however they are more than capable of matching the best when it comes to ageing.

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
