  • Goedhuis, July 2023

The Terraces come from a small single vineyard planted in 1998 sitting on soils rich in decomposed granite and limestone. Racing with energy, this 2019 is alive with bright fruit and fresh floral aromatics. The purity of fruit here is dazzling, with swirls of crisp lemon, grapefruit, white peach, and apricot all tinged with a salty, mineral edge. Toasted almonds and marmalade complexities add richness on the beautifully textured palate. Delightfully fresh thanks to a crystalline acidity, this has all the tension and precision you’d expect from California’s hugely successful 2019 vintage. Only 193 cases made. Drink 2023–2029.

Clean lines of white melon, nectarine and lemon verbena make for a sharp, focused and unique nose on this bottling. Grapefruit zest enlivens the tip of the sip, as warmer pine nut, melon and honeysuckle flavors slide into a citrus-spiked popcorn finish.

Producer

Eden Rift Vineyards

Under vine since 1849, Eden Rift is one of the oldest continually producing estate vineyards in California. A remote, pacific refuge located under the shadow of the Gavilan Mountain Range, the estate rests on the San Andreas Fault. Only 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, this site benefits from an ideal, temperate maritime climate as well as the coveted calcareous soils requisite in the cultivation of vivid and energetic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Eden Rift's winemaker Cory Waller, spent time in Napa, Oregon and in Martinborough, New Zealand, and neighbouring Calera, before joining the team at Eden Rift. A man of few words, Waller favours the fruit of vines that struggle profoundly to produce small, yet delineated yields. He prefers to allow Mother Nature to do her thing.

Region

California

California is responsible for producing more than 80% of all North American wine. The state extends some 1,100 km north to south and vineyards can be found along most of its length. Pacific ocean breezes and high altitude offer welcome cooling influences to the warm, bright sunshine. This region is rich in old vines, many being planted in the late 19th century and boasts an extraordinary range of soil. It's home to someof thge worl's most prestigious wines and produces a rich and diverse range of wine styles, from stately and expressive Cabernet Sauvignons to juicy and elegant Pinot Noirs. Notable wine regions include Napa Valley and Sonoma County.
