Region

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is an AOC in Burgundy with a temperate and semi-continental climate which produces large quantities of light, fruity red wine from the Gamay grape. Although technically in Burgundy, Beaujolais often produces more wine than the whole of the rest of the region put together in a year. Beaujolais wines are also distinguished from the classic, barrel-matured Burgundies by their wine making method known as carbonic maceration (though usually semi-carbonic maceration is practised) giving their distinctive pear drop and banana aromas. Beaujolais Villages is the second most important Beaujolais appellation which accounts for about 25% of production. It has to come from the northern, hillier part of the region where there are ten Crus that have earned their own appellations. These are: St Amour, Juliénas, Chénas, Moulin à Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Regnié, Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly.
