From two relatively young parcels of vines, this is a fine 1er Cru facing southwest towards Pernand Vergelesses and Savigny lès Beaune. A bright and clear style, with hints of cedar and flavours of summer pudding. The tannins provide a tension and freshness, which picks up a lovely sweetness on the finish.

The 2020 Aloxe-Corton Les Vercots 1er Cru is tangibly cut from a different cloth on the nose compared to the Village Cru: much darker fruit, a subtle marine influence at play, an almost pastille-like quality. The palate is medium-bodied with sinewy tannins on the entry that frame the cranberry and strawberry fruit laced with white pepper. There is a little oak to be assimilated on the finish, but I can see this giving 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2025 - 2040

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18+

I have always felt that Les Vercots was a quieter and more mineral-imbued wine, and this has meant that I have often left it out of wine lists and my own purchases, but in 2020 this is a sublime wine with stellar concentration and class. It is the finest Les Vercots I have ever tasted, and it is a sign that Aloxe-Corton is finally coming of age, vineyard by vineyard as this largely forgotten village is finding its feet with magnificent wines like this one.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 84-87

Pinot très fin in a terroir which is not. Nor is the vintage for that matter. Exotic purple, with ripe plums on the nose, After the burst of fruit, now including some blacker notes, come tarry tannins. I fear that the 15.4% alcohol will be hard to swallow.

The wines of Tollot-Beaut are some of the best we taste every vintage. Uncomplicated, pure and fresh, they epitomize everything that we love about wines from the Côte de Beaune. In addition, their fleshiness and approachability makes them perfect for cynics who claim that Burgundy is not their cup of tea. The 22-hectare domaine has been family-owned for years. Today, the young, friendly and exceptionally bright Nathalie Tollot manages the domaine with her cousins. The wines are vinified fairly traditionally. About 40% of the crop is de-stemmed, though this varies depending on vintage. The wines are fermented in open-top wooden vats before being aged in oak barrels that are 10-50% new. Very lightly fined and filtered before bottling, the resulting wines are often opulent with noticeable density, always clean and superbly pure. Just wonderful Burgundy.Read less

Region

Aloxe Corton

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majority of Pinot Noir is planted in thesouthern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from Aloxe-Corton tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
