Often considered the benchmark for Brunello, it would be difficult to disagree once you have sampled the 2020. Although youthful, this latest release displays a multi dimensional, kaleidoscopic character that few estates can achieve, Ripe red currants, blood orange, citrus and dried rose are just a few of the notes that emerge from a swirling glass. Warm plums and cherries cascade across the palate and fine tannins coat the finish. This is unbelievably fine with a finish that lasts for several minutes. Hide this away in the cellar 5 years.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 94+

Incredibly floral and mineral, the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino displays a cascade of rose petals, violets, white smoke, underbrush and dried strawberries. This is wickedly fresh and feminine in style, with a vibrant core of acidity and juicy red berry fruits that swirl throughout, complemented by a sweet herbal thrust. It finishes with lovely length and concentration yet is still potent with crunchy tannins and a resonance of savory spice that lingers on and on. This understated yet drop-dead gorgeous Poggio di Sotto Brunello should put on more weight with cellaring, but today, it's already enjoyable on its potential alone.

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 17+

Just mid ruby. Lifted, distinct balsamic nose with a suggestion of exotic spice. Crunchy red fruit and raspberry marked by tactile, finely ground tannins. Light of touch and intriguing. Great, firmly structured length. (WS)

  • Audrey Frick, January 2025, Score: 96

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is a bright ruby red color and is pretty and fruity on the nose, with notes of wild strawberries, herbes de Provence, orange zest, and saline. The palate is mouthwatering and coiled, with a haunting feel on the snappy finish, which is tangy and mineral-noted at this young stage. It's going to need time. Drink 2028-2048.

Fragrant and loaded with finesse, the 2020 Poggio di Sotto Brunello opens with heady scents of blue flower, camphor, hay and dark spice. It’s cool and classy, delivering succulent Morello cherry, cranberry, licorice and nutmeg set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced. 2029–2036.

  • Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, November 2024, Score: 97+

Very much still a baby at the time of my tasting, the Poggio di Sotto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino shares many similarities with the epic 2016 vintage in terms of its pretty perfumes and polished length. However, this elegant wine does not have the same sheer inner power. This bottle ultimately offers a fresh and charming interpretation of Sangiovese. This is a delicate wine with floral aromas, wild rose, crushed stone and white cherry. Aged in large Slavonian oak casks, it requires more time to flesh out. Harvest started the last week of August and finished the first week of October, which represents a conscious decision to start picking earlier than most. The vineyards are planted on schistic galestro soils, and that territorial imprint comes through strongly in all of these wines. I love that refreshing hint of lemon rind or navel orange at the very end.

With a twinkle in his eye, a mischievous smile and unparalleledcalmness, he speaks passionately and eloquently about his wines and his insights.Like many great estates, his individuality is reflected in his thought-provoking wines. Burgundianin style, Palmucci's creations are beautiful expressions of Brunello di Montalcino - perfumed, luxuriously silky, refined and complex - which linger copiously on the palate. Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
