  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Unsurprisingly for a vineyard that sits between Romanée St Vivant, Echézeaux and Richebourg, this 1er Cru is highly esteemed. This is a Vosne Romanée that possesses muscle, and is happy to show it off. Sometimes when tasting young its overall intensity can be overpowering, but this 2020, whilst having all Suchots’ intrinsic fullness, also has a pleasing harmonious nature. Dark fruits, fresh espresso coffee and a touch of vanilla pod, this has so much going on and will progress even further in bottle.

  • Neal Martin, January 2022, Score: 91-93

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is very pure on the nose with macerated small dark cherries, violet petals and light aniseed aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, good depth, quite sweet in the mouth and maybe just a little confit-like towards the finish, that does not quite exude the class of their top Nuits-Saint-Georges. 2025-2045 91-93

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 91-93

A more elegant and significantly better layered nose reflects notes of various dark berries, cassis, exotic spices and a hint of violet. There is once again excellent vibrancy to the velvet-textured and refined middle weight flavors that also coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in a punchy and surprisingly powerful finale. Worth considering. Outstanding. Drink: 2030+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5

I was expecting a richer wine with more texture and more depth than the Clos des Forêts Saint Georges, but this is a more backward, tense, contemplative and serious wine, and it is fantastic. The potential here is superb, yet it will be a slow-moving wine, so the wait will be interminable. However, I am certain that this will be a superb wine, and it may take two decades to get there.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 93-95

66% whole bunches, not racked. The bouquet suggests a velvety richness to follow. This has revived very well since my initial tasting, with a weight of fruit behind the fresh red fruit aspects at the front of the palate. Quite intense, with a lively finish. Once again, the use of the whole bunches seems to lengthen the finish. Just 13.5% which helps

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
