  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, February 2026

Intense flavours of Morello cherry, blood orange, wild red berries and spice mingle in this 2021 masterpiece. A Brunello of overwhelming purity and refinement that shows a fine structure and will be one to cellar for several years. An exceptional 2021 from Laura Brunelli.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2026, Score: 96+

A polished and finely detailed expression, the Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2021 Brunello di Montalcino showcases tension and subtle sweetness carried across a taut, silky palate with beautifully textured tannins. Dusty mineral notes add definition and lift, while the overall impression remains ethereal and weightless, a hallmark of the estate’s precision with Sangiovese in this classic vintage. The wine balances finesse and structure with remarkable poise. Production totals 15,715 bottles, including 180 magnums and other larger formats. Drink 2027-2045

  • Vinous, November 2025, Score: 95

Dried flowers mix with crushed rocks, grilled herbs and spiced orange peels as the darkly alluring 2021 Brunello di Montalcino smolders up from the glass. The wine is polished in feel, silken and serene with a harmonious mix of tantalizing acidity, minerals and ripe red and black fruits. While tannic, the tannins are round and refined, leaving a classically dry sensation as hints of licorice and cedary spice fade. Drink 2028-2046

  • Kerin O’Keefe, November 2025, Score: 100

The drop-dead gorgeous Gianni Brunelli stopped me in my tracks with its stunning fragrance of freshly picked violet, iris, forest berry, leather and eucalyptus. All about extreme elegance, the palate is equally captivating, delivering layers of succulent Morello cherry, wild raspberry, blood orange, dark spice and crushed mint. Taut, ultra-refined tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it vibrant and impeccably balanced. While it’s already incredibly tempting, it also promises years of graceful aging. Hats off to Laura Brunelli and her team. Drink 2029-2039. Abv: 14%

Producer

Gianni Brunelli

Having enjoyed over 10 years of success as restaurateurs in Sienna, Gianni Brunelli returned home to Montalcino with his wife Laura. In 1987, following the death of his father, Gianni bought back the family’s old property – Le Chiuse di Sotto – a modest-sized farm northeast of Montalcino, split evenly between sangiovese vines and olive groves. Together, Gianni and Laura fast gained a reputation for producing some of the most impressive Brunellos of the region, expanding their estate with the purchase of nearby Podernovone in the mid-1990s. It is from this 4.5-hectare property that their exceptional Brunello and Rosso wines are made, as well as the merlot-based Amor Costante. The Brunellis have always been fervent exponents of organic viticulture, steering clear of the use of herbicides and chemicals, with the belief that a conscientious hands-on approach in the vineyard is key to producing high-quality wines; yields are deliberately kept low, and the grapes are hand-harvested in order to guarantee the quality of fruit. Sadly, Gianni passed away unexpectedly in 2008, however Laura continues to uphold her husband’s philosophy of winemaking, while bringing her own distinctive style to the wines. Due to their lightness and elegance, Laura’s wines are superb from an early age, however they are more than capable of matching the best when it comes to ageing.

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
