A quintessential Pays d’Oc red with a Bordelais touch, the 2022 vintage of A d'Aussieres Rouge - primarily Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon - draws from the full range of the domaine’s vineyards. The cool microclimate at Domaine d’Aussière lends the wine its hallmark freshness. Bright and crunchy and full of juicy red fruit, this is an utter joy. Quite a grown up framework with lovely melting tannins and wonderful fresh acidity, the generosity of fruit makes this incredibly moreish. Red plum and mulchy raspberries, with a touch of Mediterranean herby garrigue and pepper make for a weekday red that'll impress above its modest price point. Try lightly chilled out of the cellar with a summer barbecue, or the perfect accompaniment for an autumnal bangers and mash.

Aussières has made wine since the Roman era, a period when the great properties of the “Roman province of Narbonne” were recorded in the land registry and became the main wine suppliers to Rome.  Acquired in 1999 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, the 550-hectare Domaine d’Aussières underwent a vast rehabilitation programme to restore and revitalize one of the oldest and most beautiful wine-making properties in the Narbonne region. 167 hectares of vines were replanted with carefully selected traditional Languedoc grape varieties: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan, complemented by Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay. The estate buildings were restored at the same time and a new winery installed in the old cellars, in the heart of the vineyard. Two thirds of the vineyard fall in the Corbières AOC appellation and one third in the Vin de Pays d’Oc appellation. The consistency and remarkable potential of the wines produced since 2003 have already positioned Aussières as one of the front runners in the revival of the Languedoc.Read less

Region

Vin de Pays d'Oc

The Languedoc covers a vast swathe of France from close to the Rhone at Nimes in the east round to Carcassone and Limoux looking up to the foothills of the Pyrenees in the west. Historically a bulk wine area, dominated by the co-operatives, there is an increasing focus on quality. It encompasses many interesting appellations - Pic St Loup, Faugeres, Minervois, inter alia. The regional appellation is used for wines outside these smaller areas or for producers who are not complying with the rules in one way or another. This is often in the choice of non-local grape varieties. A lot of relatively straightforward but delicious Chardonnay is produced and Viognier is enjoying a resurgence. Similarly some exceptional Cabernet based wines, such as Mas de Daumas Gassac, are coming out of this area.
