Goedhuis Waddesdon, August 2025
We could hardly believe how good this wine was when we tasted it. We were even more astonished when we saw the price! This juicy little number is from a small 7ha estate in the Cotes de Bourg. The vineyard today is passionately cared for by third generation winemaker Corinne Baudouin, who's deft touch in both the vineyards and the cellar has resulted in a wine of juicy joyfulness. No oak is used here, with concrete preserving the fresh, juicy crunch of the fruit. Utterly inviting, full of red berries, gentle spice and wonderful flow - this is a winner, and a steal to boot.
Region
Côtes de Bourg
Côtes de Bourg is a Bordeaux appellation surrounding the town of Bourg on the right bank of the Gironde, 20 km north-west of Bordeaux. It has a maritime climate and the vineyards close to the river are particularly well protected from frost damage. The Côtes de Bourg are characterised by the diversity and richness of their soils, composed of mainly clay and limestone soils with sand and gravel in some parts. Most of the wine produced is red wine. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted on clay and sandy gravel soils, while Merlot is also grown on the widespread areas of clay and limestone. Historically the region produced robust and sober wines but the wines are becoming more approachable with the introduction of more fruit driven vinification techniques. Red Côtes de Bourg are garnet in colour and are predominantly based on the Merlot grape, blended with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. They are typically earthy but fruity with blackcurrant dominating the flavour profile. They can be laid down for 6-10 years or more but can also be drunk young. A little white is made, chiefly from Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes.
