  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 92-94

This is also notably ripe while managing to retain good freshness on the pretty liqueur-like aromas of essence of red currant, forest floor, crushed anise and hint of violet. There is evident minerality to the gorgeously textured and markedly finer medium weight flavors that are caressing but punchy, all wrapped in a firm, indeed almost chewy, moderately austere and balanced finale. This is a wine that's going to need at least moderate patience as it's presently compact and tightly wound. Drinking 2034+.

The 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of plums and cherries, mingled with smoke, licorice and rose petals. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, sweet tannins and lively acids, this harmonious but authorittative wine is one of the highlights of the Ponsot range this year.

Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Chapelle Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
