  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, October 2024

A fragrant fruit compote of summer pudding aromas. A deep and broodingly structured Clos de Vougeot, this has the muscle for which this famous Grand Cru is associated. Bags of mocha, oriental spice and cocoa bean. There is a firmness and structure which means it will be at its best after some bottle age, great length and set to be a very fine old bottle.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 94-96

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle and black pepper. It's quite complex and very long on the finish. Superb. Drinking Window: 2027-2048.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 93-95

50+ year old vines located in the lower section of the Clos. Here a more restrained nose somewhat grudgingly offers up an array of pretty red berry scents that are trimmed in notes of earth, wood and a suggestion of smoked game. The delicious and vibrant larger-bodied flavors are both more powerful and more concentration though they don't have the refinement or sophistication of the Reignots on the beautifully long and more complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. At last moderate patience strongly advised. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 93-95

Mid red crimson. The barrel gives a slightly firm note to the fruit on the nose. There is a weight of red fruit beneath though this is rather reserved and only at the finish does the fruit come back. No black fruit notes at all. In reserve and slightly saline. Drink from 2032-2040.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.
