The Arlot parcel of Romanée St Vivant is as fine as it gets, directly below the great Romanée Conti, with just a 10 foot lane separating them! Heading for perfection, this is a glorious wine. Floral peony, fresh raspberry, cinnamon and tayberry scent. A fine yet weighty charm graces the palate; the tannins feel tightly woven and textured within the fruit, which is totally compatible with a pleasing degree of acidity. So complex, this hits all the marks. Superb.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 96-98

The 2022 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was picked on the final day of harvest with the Les Suchots. It matured in 40% new oak like the Premier Crus, two of the five barrels. It has a powerful bouquet like the aforementioned Premier Cru, with layers of ripe red fruit, violets and blood orange. There is some reduction here, but that will disappear by bottling. The palate is velvety smooth on the entry with impressive depth and gentle grip. It has enthralling purity of fruit, intense to the point where you can almost overlook the filigree tannins. It fans out beautifully on the lingering finish, a Romanée-Saint-Vivant to the top drawer. Drinking Window: 2028-2060.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 94-96

A fine full ruby to purple. The bouquet has, as it should have, noticeably more density than the Suchots. Still an absolute baby, the concentrated red fruit builds from a gentle start to suffuse the second half of the palate. Not over demonstrative, but I can see how this will continue to grow from here. This is currently sleeping but full of potential. Drink from 2032-2040.

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Romanée Saint Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
