Aux Brûlées sits above Richebourg and owes its name to its well exposed south-facing aspect. As a result, it is a highly prized 1er Cru within Vosne’s hierarchy, and the sunny exposure allows the berries to achieve superb ripeness which comes through despite the cooler summer conditions in 2021. A real show stopper, with a medley of summer pudding fruits. Round and voluptuous, it oozes with generosity and charm. A wonderful polish, with tender rounded tannins. Lovely.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 95-97

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb. Drinking Window: 2027-2050.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 92-95

Firm reduction. Much more interesting are the super-sleek and tautly muscular larger-bodied flavors that flash good minerality on the borderline painfully intense, powerful and robust finale that also goes on and on. This compact effort is also clearly built-to-age and a wine that should also age effortlessly. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 92-94

Ruby crimson colour, a reductive nose, with a bit of the burnt limestone character of Brûlées. Much greater density on the palate, this is a solid powerful, correctly ripe pinot, which does not show the reductive character in the mouth. A clean fine long finish. Drink from 2030-2038.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
