  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Located just below and immediately over the road from Clos de Bèze, Chappelle Chambertin typically produces an understated and highly poised wine which, stylistically speaking, sits slightly apart from the other Gevrey Grands Crus. The Domaine Ponsot’s 2023 continues in this vein, providing a lesson in reserved, unobtrusive finesse. Opening shyly, the nose gives notes of lifted white pepper, liquorice root, freshly picked mint and ripe cranberries. Darker fruit flavours of sun-ripened raspberries and grenadine are ushered through on the palate, supported by linear, mineral acidity that delivers great tension and verve. Suave tannins bring a supple texture to the long and elegant finish.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 93-94

The 2023 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very well-defined and more open bouquet compared to the Cuvée Allouettes. With cranberry and raspberry fruit alongside incense and light lavender scents, this is born to be seductive. The palate is medium-bodied and quite sapid with a little more crunchiness to the texture. There is a keen line of acidity and a vibrant, persistent finish. This ranks alongside the impressive 2022.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 93-96

Some density of purple, has fallen very clear. An intriguing bouquet of alpine strawberries, delicacy without losing intensity, definitely more strawberry than raspberry on the nose. This continues on the palate with a good balance between the fruit and the structure, and a lively aftertaste. Drink from 2032-2040.

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Chapelle Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
