  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, March 2025

Brilliant lively loganberry colour. Aromas of summer alpine fruits flit between perfumed red fruits and a touch of sweet dark berries. The palate offers the perfect balance between grace and nuanced refinement; this is Pinot Noir at its most complex and controlled Grand Cru power and longevity. The initial impression is one of hedonistic charm, with notes of cocoa and nutmeg and silky fine tannins, suede like in their subtlety. As the wine builds on the palate, its natural discretion subsides and the control and power comes into the fore. There is tremendous structure, with a delicious sweetness of fruit, kept perfectly in place by a lively freshness on the finish. A wonderful example of all that makes the Clos so special.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 96-98

Eleven different cuvées combine to form the 2023 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru, with every square meter contributing to the blend, to quote Jacques Devauges verbatim (as an aside, this is the same philosophy at Cheval Blanc, which is also on LVMH's mantelpiece). This vintage includes 80% whole bunch and was raised in 60% new oak. The bouquet is very expressive with ebullient red berry fruit, tobacco, forest floor and subtle aromas of ceps. The palate is medium-bodied with fine yet firm tannins that lend backbone and gentle grip. This fans out with style on the sapid finish with a liberal sprinkling of black pepper. The 2023 ranks alongside the 2022 and may even surpass it. Prices have skyrocketed in recent years and priced out many Lambrays-lovers, but one cannot deny the quality. Drink 2029-2065

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 92-95

This is the most floral-suffused nose in the range with its range of lilac, violet and rose petal nuances that add elegance to the black cherry liqueur scents. The middle weight flavors are not quite as dense but they are more mineral-driven and more powerful on the moderately austere, dusty and impressively long finale. This is clearly built-to-age but it's not so compact that it couldn't reasonably be enjoyed after 7 to 8 years. Drink: 2035+

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 18+

Mid ruby. Intense, complex nose of red and black fruits with woodsmoke. Concentrated and intense fruit, with at present quite a pronounced structure of powerful tannins with good acidity. On the palate more flowers, herbs and spice. As deep as it is broad and, although imposing, neither hard nor overbearing. There’s great balance, real luxury and undoubted promise. It is, alas, not cheap. (MH)

Producer

Domaine des Lambrays

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.

Region

Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the commune of Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits. The 8.8 hectares of land, largely owned by the Saier family, were elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1979 as the vineyards clearly had huge potential. Nestled between Gevrey Chambertin to the north and Chambolle Musigny to the south the best Clos des Lambrays wines combine the feminine delicacy of Chambolle with the power and structure of Gevrey.
