The fruit for this cuvée comes from a half hectare plot in Les Epoitures, a lieu dit that’s close to the Premier Cru of La Petit Chapelle and as such sits at the heart of the Gevrey appellation. The vines here were planted in 2014, so they’re still on the youthful side and give a sprightly expression of the Pinot grape. Floral and perfumed, the 2023 has notes of fresh violet alongside bright aromas of redcurrants, cranberry and grenadine. With appealing fruit sweetness upfront, a line of bouncy, buoyant acidity brings a blood orange edge to the mid palate. Ripe yet chalky tannins ensure a preppy, fresh finish to this vibrant take on the Gevrey style.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 87-89

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de l'Abbaye comes from a single parcel replanted in 2014 in Les Epointures. This offers gushing red cherries and kirsch on the nose, quite forward with veins of orange pith. The palate is balanced with fine tannins, open-knit and quite fleshy. There is light grip on the finish, which maybe needs just a little more Gevrey typicité. Drink over the next four to six years.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 88-89

Aux Epointures, replanted in 2014. Fresh mid purple. Light cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose, with just enough volume on the palate. Good tension, redcurrant and raspberry, again the acidity shows through because of the lack of intensity from such young vines, but it will find favour with those who like a less ripe pinot. Drink from 2027-2030.

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
